“House of Pain”

What a disappointment. I had heard good things from friends and online reviews, but the reality was a different story. Not the cleanest place (I thought they had cleaned up after katrina). Not the friendliest place: hosts were downright surly, and the guests were not the model of warmth either. I wasn;'t there to make friends, though, and I'm glad I didn't make friends of these. Breakfast...meh. Only thing good was the location. Oh, and if you're allergic to/not fond of dogs, keep well away from the slobbering pooches. I won't be back.

“"Walk for the Cure" requires "Rest for the Body"”

Before taking our annual stroll through City Park for the Komen Walk for the Cure, I took the wife out for a quiet and romantic getaway in our own "home town." We took the 10 minute drive into New Orleans, and enjoyed our stay in Brian's home. We didn't get to see much of our hosts during our stay...we just didn't have schedules that meshed....but Brian did everything he could to make it a great experience. Sitting on the massive front porch, watching cars, passers-by, streetcars go by....sooo relaxing, while reading a book or playing with the neighbor's curious kitty. The house is amazing and the rooms are well-appointed, clean and comfortable. We truly enjoyed our stay, and look forward to a return visit soon.

  • Liked — Location on the Canal Street Car line; proximity to Mandina's Restaurant; quiet locale; relaxing on the front porch.
  • Disliked — I can't say there were any negatives...other than the fact that we couldn't stay longer.

“Reasonable stay for the money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2008

We stayed at the Block Keller House during Mardi Gras week which meant the prices were about 50% higher than usual. That said I'll base my review on the normal prices because its unlikely that the average person will stay during "peak" season.

Overall we had a good stay. The highlights are the dogs, a slightly above average continental breakfast daily, large rooms/bathrooms, individual climate controls. Brian is very friendly and willing to answer any questions one might have while visiting. Good parking area. Great place to watch the parades if you're around during Mardi Gras.

Cons are pretty limited but are somewhat important (to us). Our largest detractor was that the room was dirty. The floor really could have used a good vacuum and mopping. I'm not asking for it to be immaculate but it definitely needed a lot more attention. Also, another thing to consider is staying on the second floor. Like any house the rooms are right off the main hallway which lends itself to being more noisy especially when people come in later at night or during breakfast. The ice machine and Microwave, and additional sitting room are also upstairs. By the way, we stayed in Room 1 on the first floor so I cannot vouch for the upstairs stay, just a recommendation.

Additional info: It is about 2.5 miles from the French Quarter and right on the trolley line. There isn't too much in the immediate area except a restaurant or two. Would recommend staying closer to the Quarter if I was to visit again, especially during Mardi Gras because parking down town is expensive and difficult.
Although, after Mardi Gras it was very easy to find a place to park.

The big question is "would I stay here again?"
Personally, no--simply because of the floor issue in the room. When I shell out over $100 a night I expect things to be pretty clean. If you take out the (lack of) cleanliness factor I'd give it an above average rating. In all fairness, it should be said too that the rest of the house was pretty clean.

“New Orleans is Back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2008

We stayed at the Block Keller House, Room 3, for 4 nights in January, 2008. It was great! The Innkeeper, Brian, was one of the most knowledgeable people I met in New Orleans and had information on everything. The rate was comparable if not better than the Inns and Hotels in the French Quarter plus it is much more quiet and you can sleep, especially on the weekends. Buster and Milo are just plain sweet dogs who love a little TLC. It's a 5 minute car ride or 15 minute trolley ride to the French Quarter and the route is right in front of the B&B. Parking isn't an issue (free) at the B&B like it is in the Quarter ($38/day). They did sustain damage from the levy breaking during Hurricane Katrina, but have cleaned it up so you don't even see it (they lost 4 rooms out of 9 on the bottom level from flooding). The rooms I liked most were Rooms 3-5 all with private baths, although the baths in 1 and 2 are very nice. The beds were comfortable, firm, but not too firm, and the pillows had substance to them. We didn't have those feather pillows that disappear as soon as you lay your head on them. The locals at the nearby restaurant, Mandina's, were super nice and food was excellent (my husband is still raving about the Po Boy he ate). New Orleans French Quarter was unaffected by the flooding and still maintains its romantic flavor. Lots to see and do there. Food was awesome. We did Emeril's, K. Pauls (Paul Proudhomme's place), and Brennen's and Brennen's was the winner hands down. Getting there: we flew into Gulfport and drove 60 miles via rental car which is a straight shot down I-10 and Block Keller is on the Canal St. exit. Easy! I highly recommend Block Keller House!

  • Liked — It's relaxing quiet atmosphere.
  • Disliked — Nothing.

“Felt very much at home - good base for trip to New Orleans”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2007

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at BK House. The room was comfortable but the bed was VERY firm. We were happy to be in an older B&B that actually had modern restroom facilities (granite), wireless internet and sufficient electrical outlets. It was also nice to be able to control our own room temp.

During our stay, we met one of the owners and he (Bryan) was a wonderful host -helpful and friendly. The dogs Buster and Milo were fabulous! We weren't quite so homesick for our pups because of them; however, if you don't love dogs this place isn't for you.

The location is awya from the hustle and bustle of the Garden District and French Quarter, but it was still an easy trip to all of the action by automobile or by streetcar. A neighborhood restaurant called Mandina's was also wonderful and only 2 blocks away. We would definitely stay here again !

  • Liked — The dogs and the convenient streetcar stop right across the street
  • Disliked — The bed in our room was way too firm for me (My hubby thought it was fine)
