Tried to make this review for Hotel Modern but tripadvisor didn't have it in the system yet i guess.
3 nights for MLK weekend. We visit New Orleans frequently and love to try different hotels.
2 adults. 1 dog. We paid about $105 and probably wouldn't pay much more at all.
Pros: Best check-in experience we have ever had. So relaxed in the lobby area. Ambiance. Candles. Music. Free glass of wine. Friendly staff. Room very clean but of course everything was new, new carpet, new paint, new decor. Great bed linens and comforter. Scarlet the mascot (parrot?) was cool. Everything nonsmoking, excellent. View of Lee Circle nice. Walkable to French Quarter and Magazine St. Smallish grassy area at front of hotel for walking your pet (please pick up after your pet folks)
Cons:
1) No parking so you have to investigate nearby lots. We found one behind the hotel for $18 and prepaid for 2 nights but when we checked on the machine for day 3 there was a sign that all vehicles had to be vacated on day 2 for MLK holiday? Hotel Staff working at that time were of no help in suggestions for alternative lots. So my husband had to walk around and find a place close enough. Driving a new sports car we wanted to be able to check on our vehicle and having it close was important. Found a lot by the WWII museum that worked out well. But spent 45 minutes trying to resolve all of this situation. My car has GPS/Sirius Travel Link and it helped a lot!
2) Street car noise, while charming gets very old while trying to sleep. For some reason we could hear a ton of emergency vehicles all night every night. I slept with earplugs but my husband tossed and turned. This also meant we had to cover our dogs ears so she would not make a noise when the sirens went by.
3) The shower would not drain. 30 seconds after running the water you were showering in 1.5 inches or more of water. Gross. (reported to the front desk upon checking out to fix for the next guests)
4) Night 3 the air conditioning stopped working and by 6:30 we got up and left because it was too warm to sleep (reported to the front desk upon checking out to fix for the next guests)
5) Their website said coffee maker in room, but there was none. :-(
6) Could find no menu for the restaurant and no way i guess to order carryout.
7) Ice machines, ice bucket, vending machine? We found none of these. Had to buy large cups of ice from the convenience store around Lee Circle.
*note: there is a small refrigerator in the room but it is filled with over priced honor bar stuff. We were lucky to squeeze a bottle of soda in there from the convenience store.
**we found the air in the room to be so dry that we both woke up coughing all night and the next days our lips were peeling and dry.
***our room on the 8th floor was above the red hotel sign...so after night one we realized and turned the blinds the other way...this eliminated 80% of the light....the night before was crazy bright...you could read a book the light was so bright. But i was very close to buying eye sleep mask from walgreens for the remainder of the stay.
****final note: we booked this on Hotels.com to save money, our first time to use hotels.com and it worked out perfect. No worries.
