“A good fit for you?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Highlights: traditional architecture and excellent service. Low point: noise from loud music nearby. The buildings have a real old New Orleans feel: tall windows, a courtyard, a pool (sort of like a fountain) in the middle of the courtyard. Lovely. As for service, we don't usually make a lot of requests, but for some reason we had several unusual needs on this trip. The staff was always professional and very helpful. Kudos! Another plus: good coffee in the lobby all day. Concerning noise, the Frenchman Street music clubs were not bad, but there was a bar with very loud amps on touristy Decatur Street, right around the corner, as well as music in the outdoor restaurant next door. Our room was near the back of the hotel, but we could still hear both. So, whether you like this place will depend on whether you mind the sounds. The room itself was mostly fine. Very comfortable bed; bathroom fixtures were not the latest, but they worked, and we're fine with that. Possible improvements would include a second chair, another shelf in the bathroom, and hooks for bathrobes.

“A Little Tired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

My wife and daughter visited New Orleans from December 23rd to December 26th. We stayed at the Frenchmen inn. It was my wife and my 4th time staying at Frenchmen inn, our first with our young daughter. In the past we have stayed in smaller rooms and only used the hotel to sleep and refresh ourselves, as we spent most of our time enjoying the quarters nightlife. We booked a 1-bedroom suite. We stayed in room 301 on the second floor over looking Frenchmen Street. The room was large and we had a balcony. The furnishings are very tired. The pull out sofa was useless as the mattress springs are coming through. The kitchen is ill equipped. The bathroom is dated and was lacking a tub stopper at check in. the whole hotel is in need of repair. There were very little festive decorations. We went out and purchased lights and decorations for our balcony. Every other hotel seemed much more festive and magical. Upon check in we requested some tips and bookings for sight seeing and restaurants. We would get bits of information but never any answers or suggested bookings. We did everything on our own, booking through the Internet when it was functioning, which was not very often. In fairness, we spent more time in our room, then we initial thought as it rained and was cold during our stay. We thought of staying an extra day when we first arrived but after viewing the room, and realizing this is not a city for a young child when the weather isn’t favorable we decided to move on. We chose New Orleans as our destination because we realize they need help at the present but very disappointed in the city over the holidays and the hotel. I don’t think we will be back to the Frenchmen Inn.

Room Tip: there are a lot of great hotels in new orleans and a lot of good deals as tourism has dropped. i wou...

Thank you for your feedback on the one-bedroom queen suite. I have recently received another complaint about the pullout sofa mattress and am in the process of finding a replacement futon.

I'm sorry the 8 foot Mardi-Gras-themed Christmas tree was not decorative enough for your family's standards. We simply cannot compete with some of the large hotels that are famous for their elaborate and extravagant Christmas decorations.

Our 24/7 front desk staff is repeatedly praised for excellent customer service. I am quite confident in each agents' ability to provide an exemplary concierge service. We would love to see you and your family at the Frenchmen Hotel again and I hope you will consider booking with us again in the future. Please do not hesitate to call regarding hotel updates on any of your concerns from your recent holiday stay.

OK, so you want a hotel room for a few nights and the Frenchmen sounds good, here's a checklist for you, just so you know what to expect:

1 Are you over 5ft 9inches?

If your answer is yes, you're screwed. The beds in these place are designed for leprechauns and other vertically challenged folk. Quite simply the smallest bed in America... possibly the whole world.

2 Are you used to sleeping under bright lights?

If your answer is "no", you're screwed as the hotel leaves all the exterior lights on all night (eco friendly it ain't) which floods the rooms with 'Close Encounters' stylee lighting which is about as conducive to sleep as a pot of coffee.

3 Like sleeping on rubber?

If your answer is no, jog on buddy... the bed sheets are such poor quality that every time you move they roll up, exposing the rubber mattress underneath which stick to your skin. Lovely on those clammy NO nights!

4 Wanna hot shower?

Well this ain't the place to be buddy. Nope, no hot water in this 'bargain' joint... Freezin' cold and lots of it.

In summary: Pretty little boutique hotel that seems to be perfect until you actually experience it up close.

Worst night's sleep for $100 I've ever had.

The ONLY saving grace is that the reception staff are very nice.

Jog on... seriously.

Room Tip: If you are more than 5ft 9" and can't sleep under headlights... jog on.

1. Our mattresses are standard double (54in × 75in), queen (60in × 80in) and king (76in × 80in) sizes.

2. Guest safety is of the utmost importance. As we are located on the bustling Frenchmen Street, it is crucial that we have outdoor lighting.

3. The mattress pads are a mandatory requirement from the Department of Health.

4. Our hot water runs through a circulatory pump system. Depending on the location of your room it is sometimes necessary to run the faucet for a few minutes in order for the hot water to reach your room.

I am sorry you did not enjoy your experience at the Frenchmen Hotel.

“Don't Beleive The Good Reviews. This Is A Dump.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

My wife an I booked this place based on a quick check on Tripadvisor, for a lay over on our way home from Texas. based on the overwhelming good reviews, and the fact that we wanted to stay close to Frenchmen St., we booked this hotel. Upon our arrival, it was obvious that what they show on their web page and what you get are two separate things. This place should be in the worst places in America to stay. It comes complete with cockroaches crawling on the floor. The place is old and not in very good repair. The room is so small that there is no chair or table in the room, so there is no where in the room to set down except on the bed. The mattress on the bed is soft and lumpy as are the pillows. The bathroom, once again is so small there is not even a counter to set anything down on. The floor in the bathroom and shower has been painted over in an attempt to cover up the mold, but the paint is peeling off exposing the mold under the paint. The air conditioner never did get the room comfortable, even though it ran all night. To top all this off, I received a call to come home early, as my elderly mother had gotten sick and had to be put in the hospital. When we informed them that we would be checking out the next morning, no mention was made that we would be charged the entire stay. The normal is that you can cancel with a days notice, which we gave them, but they say they have a 10 day cancel policy. Since I have returned, I have checked the other reviewers that have gave this place such glowing reviews. If you are considering booking this place, I suggest that you do the same before booking. This place needs to be put out of business. It is a health hazard, as well as practicing unethical business practices. If you would like to see actual photos of the rooms, email me and I will send them to you.

I am sorry you had such an poor experience. Based on your overwhelmingly negative review on every aspect of the hotel, I would suggest you book at a chain hotel in the Central Business District if you decide to visit New Orleans in the future. Clearly our unique, boutique bed and breakfast is not a good fit for you and your wife.

“Great location. Front desk staff are fabulous!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011 via mobile

Booked on bookitdotcom and got free parking but be careful as there are only 7 spaces so it's limited.
Rooms are soooo cute. If you are a light sleeper though don't get a room close to the street as jazz plays till the wee hours of the morning just footsteps away. Walking distance to everything. Safe. Can't go wrong.
