We arrived for the first weekend of the Carnivale season(2/3/12). We were excited to see the first parade of the season the Krewe du Vieaux (Saturday 2/4/12). I had no idea when I booked the hotel tha the last leg of the parade route goes right now Ursiline and our balcony (Room 201) gave us a great view of the whole thing. We loved the less touristy location because we love music and all the really fantastic jazz venues are within 2-6 blocks either along Decatur and a little further north east along Frenchmen street in neighboring Marigny neighborhood (BMC, Blue Nile the Spotted Cat, D.B.A etc).
Admittedly the hotel is on the older side. Our room was the middle balcony room on the 2nd floor and had carpeting and smelled a little musty. The neighboring balcony rooms both have hard wood floors I believe and didn't smell musty at all. For the price compared to other French Quarter hotels and for the location I can't say anything bad about this place.
Across the street you have the famous D'Or Bakery which has what I think are the best chocolate croissants in the US.
The only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the parking situation which requires toting a key back and forth to get your car out. Would be great if they would upgrade the garage door to work with the hotel keys or some other type of code. There was actually plenty of street parking right on Ursulines Street so we only had to use the garage 1 night to clear the street for the parade route. Overall fanstastic experience and kudos to the staff for being super friendly even though they deal with drunk tourists all day.
