We paid $65 per room all inclusive in August high season. Good value but with some reservations.

Positives:

Gorgeously landscaped grounds, built into the side of a steep hill. Bungalows are well spaced out, lovely swimming pool, fish ponds,shrubs.
Deluxe bungalows higher up the slope have views to the sea.
All bungalows have verandas and reasonably spacious
Good location for local shops and restaurants
Hotel restaurant good quality at reasonable price
Front desk staff friendly and helpful.
Large confortable beds.
Freshly cooked American breakfast included in price.
Front desk staff very helpful in arranging transport (same or better than street price), making calls for us, and helping with itinerary.


Negatives:

Built into the side of a mountain, so:
- no sun before 8.45 or after 3.30 (in August)
- lots of steps to climb especially to the deluxe bungalows at the top of the slope.
Bathroom spacious and with outside shower, but WC badly needed cleaning, tepid shower. Replenishment of towels, soap, etc sporadic.
No free bottled water

Rooms at the top of the slope may get visited by monkeys who will steal any food left out. Whether this is a plus or a minus depends on whether you like monkeys or not!

Kubu Bali features beautiful grounds and some seclusion away from the busy thoroughfare in Candidasa. However, this property is showing some age and seems poorly managed. Most of the lighting in our room did not work, the bed smelled musty, and the pool needed more than a good skimming. We did enjoy the setting and had fun playing badminton on the premises. I'm not sure if there is a better run accommodation in Candidasa, but this one seems to be suffering from a downturn in business and inadequate investment in upkeep.

I stayed in Room 111 where their Home page photo was taken (that the hotel staff told me).
The ocean view was beautiful, just you need to clime145 stars to get this room.

This hotel set in the Nature so if you like a Boutique hotel, go somewhere else. There are many 'monkeys' around, therefore you should not leave anything at your terrace. You might encounter insects or animals(?) that you can see trace of it.
So you realise that you are in a room made by natural products.
(Imagine what happened.)

The shower of Room 111 seemed new, so it was hot and comfortable. I wished the towel could be softer, but it's OK, I should not compare 5 stars hotel where I stayed before going to Kubu.

I took their room service twice, but the taste was not special.
I liked the food of a restaurant calls 'Balissa' at Candidasa village where quite many people were on the quiet season.

Well, I recommend this hotel for true Nature lovers.

Kubu gets a really positive review in the Rough Guide stating that it comparable with Tegal Sari in Ubud - where we were previously and had a great stay - so were looking forward to our one night there.

It was awful. The room was filthy - moth-eaten curtains, insect nests in the mosquito net, shabby towels, dirty light switches; very poorly lit with the light in the (outdoor) bathroom not working at all.

The room was surrounded by ponds that were heavily populated with both extremely noisy frogs and a plethora of mosquitoes.

To top it all off the staff were very surly - first time we have encountered this in Bali. The porters complained bitterly about carrying our bags to the room, and the receptionist over-charged us for a transfer the following morning to Padang Bai (10 minutes drive) to the tune of IR100,000!

The whole place has a feeling of decay and neglect -needless to say, I wouldn't recommend Kubu!

Similarly I wouldn't recommend Candidasa - if you can find somewhere Padang Bai is far nicer, and has a beach!
