“Peaceful and secluded but beware the mosquitoes!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2012

Palmy Lake Resort offers a selection of lovely secluded chalets, each with its own hammock and looking out onto lovely green trees. After spending one night on a houseboat (which was amazing!) we were delighted to find that the Resort was just down the road from the drop-off point and was close enough to the town of Alappuzha to get a quick auto ride down in the evening.

The one problem we experienced was loads of MOSQUITOES wanting to eat us alive! I think that it's hard to escape them so close to the water, but it meant that our plans to spend our afternoon relaxing on the balcony of our chalet and reading was impossible! We stayed in the room instead, and it was still nice as it was quiet and peaceful.

The price is great for the amount of space you get, and it includes a yummy breakfast! We had banana pancakes, mmm!

I'd recommend this place if you're on the way to or back from a houseboat expedition, but there's probably not much else in the area to warrant a stay in this area.

“A nice relaxing place to explore the backwaters”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

We stayed for two nights and had really relaxing time lounging in the hammock near our bamboo chalet which was basic but really clean and just what we wanted. Breakfast was good and macy even showed me how to make fresh putu. Biggi arranged a really nice house boat for us. Even though it is a bit out of town there are always rickshaws and if you like walking you can do it in 45 minutes.

Room Tip: Bamboo huts aren't totally closed so bugs are inevitable. There are also enclosed AC huts

“Fine, i guess”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

When i think of our stay here, i remember some positives and not so positives.

It is basic, but tranquil. We enjoyed the walks in the neighbourhood. We enjoyed the dinner specially prepared by the hostess, although we had to be persistent in persuading her to make it for us (at a cost, of course... and despite the website hyping up the dinners as a key attraction, she said it was something she no longer offered). We appreciated that we could leave our bags here while we went on a houseboat, and that they arranged a cab pickup for us at 3am.

We didn't enjoy so much the loud music from neighbouring religious institutions at all hours - a church and a temple. We also encountered an awful lot of insects in our chalet, which is perhaps par for the course and maybe we shouldn't complain about. We also felt as a 'homestay' it could perhaps have been a little more welcoming and homely.

All in all, though, won't complain.. perfectly good option, especially for backpackers or low/medium budget travellers, and seemed to compare favourably with other places.

“Great value, handy place for seeing backwaters”

We booked in for one night but came back for another two after our houseboat. Spacious, clean, comfortable chalets for under 1000 rupees at night! Mercy is really helpful and her husband Biggy arranged a houseboat for us. It is a bit out of town but this means it is quieter and there are always tuk tuks outside and you can get in to town, boat jetty or beach quite quickly for very little. There is an internet connection you can use. It is a good idea to spend some time in backwaters on smaller boat too as some of the narrower areas are really interesting and very beautiful.

“Peace & quiet away from it all”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We stayed here for 3 nights and found it a lovely peaceful place in which to rest after a hectic time travelling around. The rooms are basic but clean, with mosquito nets for protection. |The gardens are beautiful, hammocks are slung between palm trees. The owners are friendly and helpful - Merci will cook simple meals if requested. We hired their punted boat for a 5 hour trip on the backwaters -beautiful, with a stop for a banana leaf meal included. Excellent value for money. Located a way from Alllepey centre but easily accessible by tuk-tuk.
