“My detailed take on Coco Houseboats : Good but not largely different from others”

I and my office friends booked a boat house through Antilog Vacations.Reason was that we booked a whole tour package covering Thekkady and Munnar as well Moreover , a good travel agent gives u some discounts on hotels, houseboats etc It was a wonderful experience in the God’s Own Country.

About the Boat

It was a three bed room boat house. The boat was very neat, every room has a king size bed with attached toilet. The toilet was clean, each room was air conditioned and an open space roof top was available on each rooms.. It was only 1 hour travel from the station to Allapuzha house boat. The staffs were very active and we were given welcome drinks on arrival. The Boat house has 1 kitchen and a lobby like place apart from the rooms. The Lobby was fully furnished with chairs, sofa, dining table and a satellite TV.

The Tour

It was an immense pressure to travel along the back water lake surrounded by green trees every where on both sides of the lake. There are so many villages on either side of the lake. They provide food for all the three times in the stay, they have veg and non veg which is too good. There is a market in the middle, you can purchase big size lobster or Curry fish or fruits etc. You can ask the staffs to prepare the stuff you bought from the market. They stop the boat for fishing. I caught a big fish from the lake which is the first time in my life. We enjoyed our night stay in the boat with the music.

Kerala Houseboat : Difficult to trust boat operators ?

Though I found that houseboat people are difficult to trust. They normally try put people in worst houseboats if u approach them directly & not so professional as well.Houseboat experience can easily turn into a nightmare ( as we saw with one NRI ) who were seen quarreling with a fellow boat owner over the room * houseboat condition. If there is a no intermediary between you & boat owner , you can be in a soup. They don’t believe in repeat customers as they have enough business in seasons.Thankfully we dint faced any of such hassle.

Pricing & Overall - Satisfactory

The price was reasonable, we 9 people stayed with all the foods included for only 10,000.. The hospitality of the staffs is Ok; we had a home feeling through out our tour. Please don’t travel in the summer season, its too hot. The best time to travel in the house boat is from Dec to March. The cost during the season time is little bit high when compare to normal times.

Overall , services were good but I did not found it any different from any other houseboats in the vicinity. Its kindda same. The only thing is that they market it

Room Tip: A single bed houseboat is best

“Awesome Experience!”

Our family of 6 spent a night in December 2011 on a 2-bedroom houseboat operated by Coco Houseboats and I must thank the team for making our backwaters trip absolutely awesome and pleasurable.

Traveling the backwaters of Kerala on a houseboat was certainly a highly relaxing and enjoyable experience. Coco Houseboats had arranged for excellent accommodation and had done up our rooms and beds very well. The rooms were clean with comfortable beds and large windows that gave unobstructed views of the surrounding scenery. Our on-board crew was very hospitable and took care of us in a very kind and homely manner. The food was truly exceptional. Our family is a mix of vegetarians and non-vegetarians, so the chef ensured that there was enough variety for both.

Coco Houseboats is the perfect example of how a Customer should be treated. My family is grateful for the beautiful holiday you gave us. :) I would highly recommend Coco Houseboats if you plan a trip to the peaceful backwaters of what is truly God's own country.

“Very relaxing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

We spent one night on the boat. The trip was very relaxing, the stuff was professional and very kind. The food was delicious (vegetarian) and the boat was clean, especially toilet.
The 'Coco taxi' waited for us at the Kochin airport and it was easy to come to right place.
We recommend this agency and this trip if you like a peaceful journey.

“Clean boat, professional staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2011

Spent a night on the house boat (with 3 bedrooms). The boat itself was well maintained and the rooms adequate. Wish the common area had more comfortable chairs. Food was excellent, and the staff very professional. The particular boat that we were on had the insect net in the common area torn, so, had to pull down the heavier rain protector covers on in the evening to keep the insects out. We missed out on the moonlit night views because of this :( Also, the AC in the rooms were on full blast with no way of turning up the temperature at night. We went from sweating outside to shivering in the AC cold at night.

“Good but not perfect”

The way to the boat goes thru a mud path and the pick up after the tour is not organized. These things have to be changed when they take 100 € for one night. The boat was good, the crew friendly and the food typical but not special. All in all it's a 3.5 and could get easy a 4. But the price is still high. For 2 nights on the boat (and you have to make 2 nights if you want a relaxing trip) you could also stay for a week in a nice hotel on the beach including food.
