“Clean, great location, helpful owner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

This was the perfect place for our one night stay in Alleppey.

Great location: It is a short walk to several shops (look out for the banana crisp (chip) shops!), restaurants and the canals. It's also a short rickshaw ride to the very interesting RKK Memorial Museum (review to follow).

The room: Our upstairs, AC and fan en suite room was spacious, clean and quiet with windows on two of the walls. The WIFI connection in the room was very good and the TV had the BBC World Service channel and (I think) CNN. My only (very minor) grumble is that, while there was a bin outside each room, there wasn't one in the bathroom.

We enjoyed a filling breakfast of eggs (one of us had a plain omelette and the other had fried eggs), toast with pineapple jam, baby bananas, pineapple juice and a white, typically Keralan dish whose name I have forgotten!

The owner, Matthew, was very helpful. Among other things, he advised us on the different boat options for cruising the backwaters, which beaches to visit and at what time of day, and what prices to pay for boats/taxis/rickshaws so we knew what to expect.

“Fantastic stay at family run Venice Castle 14 - 16 Dec 2011”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Away from very busy and noisy Allepey at the end of a quiet lane in the midst of green, this very nice family run home. Upon our arrival we were wellcomed very hearty by Matias and his family. We could leave our luggage at VC as we left right away for a houseboat trip and took only one bag with us. Matias organized for us a wonderful trip and overnight stay. The bedroom on the boat was enchanting, the meals very copious and the 3p staff thoughtful. From the big boat boat we stepped into a small boat to visit more closely the village and the small canals. Wear thick pants because of the mosquitos and don't forget to take your cream with you!
Matias and his family were very helpfull. breakfast was very nice - the rooms very spacious, a lot of light and very clean. The bathroom also was very clean. The AC worked very well.Through whole the house there was an air of peace and kindness. We can strongly advice you this place.

“Incredible Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Matthew (the owner) was so helpful during our stay. I highly recommend this place because of his commitment to service - something we didn't always find in India. We had a houseboat booked but he warned us that there may be a workers strike looming on the day we had it booked. He spent about an hour out of his day working to find us another nice boat a day before the strike. He even came to look at the boats with us. He really didn't have to do any of this. We ended up having a great night on the boat all because of Matthew's dedication. Thank you!

“Oasis of Peace”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We stayed at Venice Castle from 27.-30. January with our 8 yr. old daughter. Our upstairs room was very airy and had a wonderful view into the green trees. I don*t understand why Alleppy is compared to Venice, as the City is not really a beautiful spot. Loud, much traffic and especially after a long trip without AC coming from Cochin, arriving at Alleppy Castle is wonderful. It is a gren Oasis in the City. Matthew and especialy his assistant Eldos ( the soul of the house) are helpful with whatever wish one has. They recommended and arranged massages at a very good, not touristy Ayurveda Place at short notice. They also recommended a small boat to take us through the canals. This was especially wonderful, as my daughter and me had the boat to ourselves. At 1200 Rupies for 4 hrs it was very worthwile. To get to Alleppy Beach one has to take a Riksha (50 Rs) and in the evening its nice to hang out there. We took a ride on the beach on a camel. Most people stay a very short at Venice Castle and therefore its great because it is so close to the boat jetty. If one wants to sty longer, maybe an out of town place would be even more relaxed. Otherwise I can fully recommend this place. Safe, clean, caring for the needs of travellers and very honest. When Eldos found out that we hadn*t used the AC they reduced the roomrate, without me knowing and asking. That really shows they are not out to make a fast buck, but are fair at what they do. Moneywise the small hotel(rather than a homestay) is a bargain.Very good also the fresh pineapple juice for breakfast.
