“Amazing”

The Primate Lodge in Kibale Forest National Park is an eco-lodge. It is surrounded by tropical forest that is home to 13 different species of primates, including the chimpanzees....We heard them walking to and fro near our hut during the night ...
It was a truly authentic jungle experience! There are tree houses available, unfortunatly they were fully booked, but the tent'd been great as well.
We had a very goog breakfast and a very nice romantic dinner in the glow of candles as the only light source..

“good job!”

During my stay at Primate lodge I was accommodated in luxury tent however I wouldn’t call it tent. It’s more likely a house with walls made of fabric on a wooden sole that is a bit elevated above the ground and straw roof covering all of this. At the back of the tent there is a wooden part with bathroom (really nice one, with hot water) Towels, shower gels/ soaps etc. are there a part of basic equipment. My tent had 2 beds, small table with chairs inside and 2 other one outside on small terrace. The surrounding is really wonderful. All around you just rain forest. For sure worth making a small walk to get to the tent from a main building. (during the night the paths are alighted). The food is really really good as well. From fresh juices till nice steaks. If you are a person that like a bit of luxury, proper services, food etc. it is a places to be.

“A great place in the middle of a rainforest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

I love sleeping in a rainforest, and this was one of the prettiest and most comfortable ways I've done this. We stayed in the luxury tent - really a massive tent with an en-suite bathroom, on a wooden platform and under a roof. In front of the tent there are small chairs, where you can just sit and listen to the sounds of the forest. The tents are distributed in the forest in a way that you don't see anything around but the trees and plants, so you really have a feeling of sleeping directly in the rainforest, especially at the dusk when all the insects and animals start to scream. Generally one of the best night rests I've had in Uganda (plus good mattresses, which are also not all that common around the country).

There's hot water, though the pressure is not great, so if you want to wash long hair, it's kind of annyoing, but then again I prefer that to having a generator in the rainforest to ruin the experience (the hot water is solar-powered). The food was great, again catering to vegetarians with no problems at all.

Overall, a very recommendable place.

A tip - there's a group of orphaned children in the village nearby who formed a traditional dance and music group, and can go and do a performance at the lodge (they don't perform as a part of the stay at the lodge, but I think you can ask the manager to arrange it). It's nice to see a bit of traditional dance, drums and music, and it's also a good way to help these kids a bit.

“Stone cottages too expensive”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2011

While the setting is nice, the price is way too high for what you get in the cottages. There is no water pressure and things are very jury-rigged, tending to break or fall off the wall. The bathroom floor is rough stone; the shower drains all over the floor (no plan for gravity helping drainage), and so is always wet. Manager Emanuel did not give a good impression - can't describe better than to say he seemed kind of sleazy. Sunya and John were most accomodating.
The tree house is one small twin bed and a mattress to put on the floor with open window. Would expect many "visitors". No toilet. Try the treehouse at Chimps Nest instead for a class act.

“A wonderful place: more than adequate for your needs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2011

We stayed at Kibale Primates Lodge for one night in February 2011 and our only major regret was not staying longer. The setting is wonderful, right in the middle of the forest with one central lodge building that has the bar and restaurant area with the individual tented chalets scattered amongst the surrounding forest area, reachable by forest tracks that are clearly signposted depending on the name of your particular chalet.

We had read widely on conditions in Uganda before travelling there and we were prepared for the lack of power in the form of both lighting and sockets, so it actually came as a pleasant surprise to find that the room had lighting, and we were also impressed that Uganda has cottoned on to the concept of energy saving light bulbs rather more quickly than the rest of us, so the low illumination did not cause us a problem. The rooms are very generous in size and contain two double beds. If anything, they could perhaps do away with one of the beds in favour of a more luxurious seating/table area, but given that you spend relatively short amounts of time in your rooms, it seems rather churlish to recommend that they change things there. The bathrooms are also huge and you have plenty of space to move around. Yes, they are a bit dark and the water pressure from the shower results in your ablutions taking slightly longer while you wash the soap off, but we found that all to be part of the jungle/forest experience and were happy to go with the flow - if you pardon the pun.

The water supply is solar heated so you are marginally limited in terms of hot water and the supply is primarily gravity-fed so this contributes to the conditions that those reviewing on here will have experienced. The main difference I guess is how you handle it and what your general mentality is to these sorts of things - ours apparently is just to get on with it and consider it part of the experience whilst concentrating on the amazing location, wildlife and general ambience of the place during our brief stay. We managed two hot showers each per day, so were more than satisfied with the conditions.

One thing that is certainly worth specific mention is the food at Kibale Primates Lodge. It's wonderful. We were fed incredibly well during dinner, breakfast and lunch before we departed and KPL really set a high standard at the beginning of our time in Uganda. The beers were cold and plentiful and our time spent sitting in the fire pit ranks amongst many of our most cherished memories of our trip.

The Lodge is situated a brief 3-4 min stroll from the starting point and briefing centre for the chimpanzee tracking so it couldn't be better placed. It has sufficient covered spaces for shelter during the short but heavy rain storms that can pass overhead and the cacophony of sounds at nightime is simply staggering as the grasshoppers/crickets and cicadas get started.

During our stay there we were woken by the sound of a passing elephant as it trashed its way through the forest beside our tent and after the initial alarm at the sound of the breaking trees and branches subsided we settled down to one of the most amazing nights of our Ugandan tour deep in the heart of the Kibale National Park Forest. Quite simply a breathtakingly stunning experience for anyone with a bit of guts and willing to acknowledge that the facilities are going to be basic but adequate for your needs.
