When pulling up to this bed and breakfast after an 8 hour drive, as opposed to being relieved we would have a moment to rest, we were mortified to see we had apparently booked a room at the Bates' Motel. The outside of the inn is in disrepair. The gutters overflowed with what seemed like years of debris. Upon walking in the front door, we were knocked over by the smell of mold and cooking oil. The carpets were dirty and everything was covered in dust. No one greeted us immediately, and when she did, she was barefoot, wearing jeans and a crumpled polo shirt. She seemed nice enough, so we figured we'd give it a try and went up to our room. The room was awful. I was scared to sit on the bedspread which was stained. The linens did not appear to have been washed. The bathroom was filthy and there was no toilet paper. At the point my boyfriend had an asthma attack due to the filth, we decided enough is enough and decided to cut our losses and find other lodging. My boyfriend commented he'd rather sleep in the car than stay there. Luckily, after explaining to the "greeter" (housekeeper?, cook?) that my boyfriend could not stay there for health reasons, she agreed to refund our credit card.
On a positive note, this lodge is central to downtown Gatlinburg.
