I make trips to the Smokies a few times a year for vacation and to take photographs in the mountains. This time, I was going over the Fourth of July weekend. All of the chain hotels I checked were hiking their rates up for Friday, July 1, through Monday, July 4. Since I was going to be there six days, I wanted the best deal possible. I got a $61 nightly rate on Rocky Top Village Inn's website for all six days.
When I checked in, their system showed a rate of $81 per night. I showed the man working the desk my confirmation, and he changed it to $61 in their computer without hesitation. I got my key (yes, an actual key - not a programmed plastic card) and headed to my room since it was late.
I was a bit surprised when I walked in. The decor is outdated (although in good shape for the most part). This particular room had a hallway behind the main room with a walk-in closet, the bathroom - and doors to the adjoining rooms on each side. That concerned me a bit, but not as much as the fact that they put me in the backside of the motel (yes, this is a motel) when there were plenty of empty rooms on the front side.
Despite the outdated decor, the room was very clean - although the hallway and the bathroom where hot because the air conditioning unit you typically find in these places wasn't blowing air into that area.
There is no restaurant, but they do have coffee and free Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the office each morning (they do advertise it as that on their website, rather than "free breakfast"). It is convenient to the Parkway and all of the shops, restaurants and attractions - probably about three blocks up from the Parkway.
Since I just need a place to shower and sleep on my trips, this was OK - considering the holiday weekend and the rates at other places. If you only need a shower and a bed, this would probably be acceptable to you. I personally don't think it would work for people who spend a lot of time at their room or for families. I also don't think it's worth more than about $60 or so a night at any time of the year since there are better options for that price range most times (excluding October and holidays).
Room Tip: Ask for a room on the pool side
