I have stayed at the Gillette Motel several times and keep going back every year. My parents and I were there over the 4th of July holiday weekend and we were not disappointed. (I am an adult traveling with older parents.) My elderly dad enjoys sitting outside on the porch; the chairs are very comfortable even for him. The rooms were very clean and the staff is friendly. I have not taken advantage of the pool in recent years, but it is a good-sized pool and looks like it is still nice. The location is perfect - about 1 1/2 blocks off of the Parkway, which is not bad to walk. It is next door to La Carreta Mexican Restaurant on one side and very close to Log Cabin Pancake House on the other side. Across the street is the Convention Center and a trolly stop.
The decor is dated but is just fine. The rooms are brightly lit, which I like; I've stayed in many hotels/motels which do not have enough light and/or have a dark corner. There is a very good light over the sink for putting on makeup. I like the white cotton bedspreads for two reasons: (1) they are not heavy if you want to sleep under them, and they can be rolled down to the end of the bed if you don't need that much cover - I usually have to take the heavy comforter-type bedspreads completly off the bed at other hotels. (2) More importantly, the white cotton bedspreads can be washed and bleached right along with the sheets, so they are much cleaner than the comforter bedspreads that other hotels have and probably rarely wash.
Unlike the other posters here, I had no problem with the wireless internet. I don't know how long they have had it - their website says it is "new." I've only had a laptop available for travel for the past couple of months. It detected two wireless networks for Gillette; I tried the Network 2 and had no problems connecting or staying connected. I did notice that it times out after 24 hours and you have to re-connect, but it wasn't a problem.
Their rates are usually a little less than other motels in Gatlinburg, too. So I expect to stay there again the next time I want to stay in downtown Gatlinburg.
