“Moved to another hotel.”

We booked through Expedia, and got the exact same rate that AAA and the hotel itself had for 1 night friday night stay. I book through Expedia because they have always taken good care of me when there is a problem. They guarantee your trips. We got there about 9pm and were ready to check in, get settled, and walk around downtown Gatlinburg and see the Christmas lights. The hotel, or I should say the lobby and 2 front buildings are within walking distance to the downtown area and aquarium. Well I checked in, and asked if we had a riverfront room. The hostess said,"No, you booked through expedia." I asked her what that meant. She stated that I should never book with Expedia, I should book through the hotel directly. She said that the hotel is allowed to only book certain rooms for Expedia customers and is not allowed to move them anywhere else in the facility even if it is available.(this has not been the case in my previous experiences with Expedia). I asked if I could pay to upgrade, since the hotel was obviously not full (like 5 cars in the parking lot) and she said no. I said so I am offering to pay more money and I still cant move. She said no. She got all my information, got me checked in, and then showed me where our room was. We didn't even know the hotel had this many buildings. All the pics and the website do not advertise this. We were 7 buildings back next to a "mountain view" It was a giant mountain ledge 30 feet from our Window so we were looking at the boulders. It was dark with no street lights, and there were 2 other cars in that building. We were 2 females traveling together for a girls weekend, and we didn't want to get out of the car. It was not a safe environment. I called expedia, explained the situation, and they were able to call the front desk and speak with her and she convinced her to cancel us. Expedia then found us a Fairfield Inn Marriot that was stunning, clean, well lit, and the same price. That, my dear, is why I always use Expedia!!! While we were on hold with Expedia, we went in the room, and checked it out in case they wouldn't cancel us. It was gross. Very old, very basic, old style TV, and we had like a 3x3 window of downtown area. It was ridiculous. It was clean, but I paid the exact same amount and got the Marriott. If you think you have to stay in this hotel, Book through the hotel, and make sure you ask for a River view room. That way you will be close to civilization. We won't ever be coming back to this hotel again, and I will make sure all of my friends who go to Gatlinburg for the weekend do not either. The staff could use a good inservice from a company like Disney for customer service and personality.

Room Tip: Make sure you book through the hotel directly, and get a RIVER FRONT ROOM WITH A BALCONY

I was very dissapointed to read this review as we strive to make sure our Guest Satisfaction is a top priority here at The River Terrace Resort and Convention Center. I apolgize for the miscommunication you received while making your reservation, but River Front rooms are not available to book through third party booking agents. This is due to the rate differences, cancellation policies, etc.
If you would like to book a River Front Room in the future, please go through our direct website, contact our Front Desk at: 865-436-5161 or you may call me directly at this same number and ask for the General Manager and I will be more than happy to assist you with your reservation plans. Again, I apologize for the events that took place during your last visit to Gatlinburg.

“Perfect reception, perfect stay....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

My overrall experience at River Terrace....SIMPLY PERFECT AND ROMANTIC. My wedding was in Gatlinburg at a chapel during Thanksgiving weekend, Nov 26, 2011. I reserved my reception and blocked off rooms (under PRESSLEY WEDDING GROUP) for family members and friends there at the River Terrace. Oh my gosh, everything was perfect. Enola and Travis made sure my reception was amazing from start to finish. And the food was delicious and plentiful. The reception space and decorations were unlike any other reception I've seen. My family and friends are still expressing their wonderful comments about it. When we arrived, they allowed us early check in so we can be comfortable and already on site to take care of wedding business - and we thank you for this. The rooms were clean and very spacious, and we especially enjoyed the 2-level, 2 bath unit on the top level of the riverwalk building. My husband and I will definitely return in the coming months for one of your romantic packages and look forward to staying in our same room (fingers crossed) so we can renew our vows once again. Thanks again to Enola and Travis, and the rest of the staff who made our day/weekend perfect and who showed my family and friends so much love. I really appreciate your dedication and hard work at making us feel apart of your family.

Room Tip: Stay on the top level of the river walk building. The units are 2-level, 2-baths.

“Pleasant, but needs some improvements; however might stay again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

We had read good/not so good reviews on tripadvisor.com, especially concerning problems with the parking; so, we decided to wait until our arrival to make reservations...which was a little nerve-racking, considering it was Thanksgiving week! However, upon our arrival, there was a room available with 2 queen beds, micro, fridge and fireplace overlooking the river. We weren't able to see the rooms, because they have had many problems with people not returning keys in a timely fashion after reviewing rooms; so, we drove around to several other places to make sure this was the place we wanted to stay...we were able to glance into one of the rooms while driving by (as the door was open) and the parking looked a little precarious, but not too bad....after looking around town, with most places booked or much more expensive than The River Terrace, we decided on staying. Upon taking our bags to the first room - located on the 5th floor right by the elevator (room 3520, I think) - there was make-up on the bathroom counter...I believe the housekeeper maybe had just "spot cleaned" in here, but the rest of the room was immaculately clean... So we called the front desk, they were INCREDIBLY apologetic, offered to move us, or refund our money. Because they were so ready to oblige, because we really liked the room and location, because our 2 boys were very excited to be staying "on the 5th floor, overlooking the town," AND because they had another available room at the end of the same floor, right by the stairs, we just decided to stay... The staff quickly BROUGHT us a new set of keys. The second room (room 3530) was great, very clean, and a corner room; so, we actually had a little better view of the town and the mountains. (*The room we stayed in is in the River Tower building, the tall building shown in the hotel's profile pic above.) The beds were comfortable, the pillows - not so much; the gas fireplace was nice and the mountain view from the balcony was great with the sound and view of the river flowing below. The location of the hotel/motel is wonderful because you can leave your car parked and just walk into town. It is located right behind the "mall" at stoplight 3a. They really need to think about remodeling the rooms a bit cosmetically...they have this corregated wood on several of the walls and on several of the buildings that makes it look a little cheaper than it has to; the restaurant was good at all, but we just felt sorry for it rather than mad, the bathrooms could use some upgrading and the parking....oh, the parking.... Due to it being Thanksgiving weekend, the parking lots were not so bad, but had it been a really packed weekend, the parking would be horrendous. The parking lot for the River Towers has this wall around it and the relatively small opening in which to angle your car just right to get through. They just need to take out 2 sections of this wall, and it would be much better. They have an outdoor pool, but it was covered due to winter season; so, I can't give an informative review of it. Overall, I'd give it a C+/B- rating, but if we wanted to stay downtown on River Road again, we might stay. It's not the best, but so many of those hotels on River Road are worse from the outside than this one, and the staff here is great; so, it would definitely not be crossed completely out. (oh, and they gave us 10% off our bill because of the room change!...that makes up for alot! :))

Room Tip: Rooms in River Tower overlook River Road and the river. I would only stay in the front 2 buildings.

Thank you very much for the fair and honest review of The River Terrace Resort and Convention Center. Our top priority is Customer Service and Guest Satisfaction, so it pleases me to hear the positive comments made of our Team doing everything possible to take care of you and ensure your stay is an enjoyable one.
Our property is on the older side, so we are always working to improve on cosmetics, but, one thing we are very proud of, is the fact we have the cleanest rooms in town and that is one thing our guests can always count on.
We look forward to seeing you again soon!
