This was our first visit to the Jackson Hole-Grand Teton area. Dornan's cabins are beautiful inside and the rustic decor is perfect for the mountain setting. The location of the complex is great for those wanting to explore the town of Jackson, or Grand Teton National Park. As a matter of fact, the cabins are just a half block from the entrance station to the National Park. We had two lights burn out on the same evening, but the staff responded almost immediately and replaced them for us. The bathroom layout is great...the tub/shower combo and toilet are separated from the sink area by a second door, allowing one person to shower, yet leave the sink accessible for hand washing...etc....The living room is adorned by a beautiful Pendleton blanket hanging on the wall. There are windows in each room which can be opened to allow cross ventilation on warmer days. The cabins are near the river, but only two are actually on the river. Some of the cabins have a sliding door and patio with chairs, but the Thor cabin only had a small porch. There is a retail/restaurant/gas station area just above the cabins on the hill which is not lighted at night and is extremely dark to navigate out if one chooses to leave very early in the morning. Dornan's has a common parking area where all guests must park, then walk back to their respective cabin. The path to the Thor cabin is very narrow asphalt type material, with several dips and bumps. My friend uses a cane, and after dark I had to illuminate the path with a flashlight so she would not trip and fall. We did notice some of the paths being replaced with a much wider wooden boardwalk, and hopefully they will replace all the old asphalt walkways. It is very difficult for a person with a physical handicap to navigate these old paths. The parking area is also extremely dark at night, with only very small lights along the walking paths. Dornan's restaurant has great food, but seems to cater to those into the lounge/club scene. It has a very large bar area and tables which overlook the mountains with a great view. They do not serve burgers of any kind, mostly pizzas and pasta. There is a small grocery store at the complex as well, but many of the items in the store were not priced, as far as we could tell. We ended up spending nearly $40 for less than 10 items. They also have a deli section where sandwiches can be made to order. The wine shop is attached to the restaurant, but again, this scene caters to the club scene and did not seem to be a family friendly eatery. The landing path to Jackson Hole airport is directly (and I do mean directly) above Dornan's and when a plane lands it reminds one of being back in the City. Thankfully, there are only a handful of flights per day into this facility. The view out one of the cabin bedroom windows was a utility building with several garage doors and various types of vehicles. If you reserve a cabin here, I would make sure you do not take the Thor cabin, although the view out the kitchen/living room area is most beautiful of the Tetons. The beds are very comfortable, and the couch is a sofa sleeper. They leave plenty of extra blankets and pillows in the cabins as well. You must remove all trash from the cabin, and the day before we left, I walked the entire facility/grounds and could not locate a dumpster or recycle bin anywhere. The cabins are is a slightly wooded area along the river, between the main highway and the river. The entrance to the National Park is a short drive away, with a post office very nearby, and the Visitor center right across the street. Just before our departure on October 8, a nearby road (Moose-Wilson Road) was barricaded by the Park Rangers due to the fact that a female Grizzly bear with cubs was seen in the immediate area. If you prefer to stay in a facility actually in the forest very near the mountains, there are several within the National Park past the entrance gate. Just an FYI, there are no restaurants in the area other than Dornan's.........you must make the 18 mile drive back into Jackson for any type of fast food, or larger family style restaurants. There is nothing northbound from Moose for many miles as far as restaurants or gas stations, except perhaps one of the lodges back in Grand Teton National Park. The commercial airport is about 8 miles due south of Dornan's. Overall, this is a great place to stay, but not quite "off the beaten path" for our taste.
Room Tip: Ask for one of the two cabin duplexes nearest the river
