“OK, but a little dated”

I was looking for a hotel to stay at in Grand Marais and a quick Google search turned up the "Shoreline Motel". I did not see any pictures before I booked, just the location. I was looking for a place right on the lake.

Both rooms that face the lake and rooms that do not face the lake are available. It was about $20 more for a room with a view. On the positive side, it is RIGHT on the shoreline. What a location! The view was gorgeous and I could hear the waves crashing all night long which was quite relaxing.

Now the negatives...The place appears to be a remodeled apartment building or perhaps an old hospital of some sort built in the 50's or 60's. Corrugated sun shades and fussy old windows detract from an otherwise beautiful location. There is no air conditioning so it is likely to be a bit warm during the summer.

The room was OK but nothing spectacular. I had to laugh at the PINK bed sheets! That and the old bathroom fixtures (at least they weren't pink) reminded me a bit of being at Grandma's house...

Despite the dated decor, I found the bed and the chairs in the room to be quite comfortable. My room had a king size bed. It might actually be a bit TOO soft for some people but I slept pretty well.

I would probably stay here again but if you're looking for modern elegance, look elsewhere.

“Nice hotel in a fabulous location!”

We stayed at the Shoreline while on a New Year's Eve ski trip to Lutsen and had a great time. Sure, the hotel was a bit outdated but it was clean, comfortable, the location was unbelievable (right on the water and a very easy walk to downtown) and the service was good. Shannah, a front desk representative, was especially helpful and friendly. Thanks!

“Any closer to Lake Superior, and you'd be in the water”

The Shoreline Hotel in Grand Marais is literally steps away from Lake Superior. If you stay at the hotel, go out on the patio, and you will enjoy a beautiful view of the lake. We booked early and were able to get a room with a view of the lake.

The hotel is run by the Grand Marais Hotel Company, which also runs the following hotels/motels in town: Super 8, Aspen Lodge, and Spruceglen Inn. We chose the Shoreline because of its location on the lake - and we were not disappointed.

Despite being near the lobby, our room was very quiet. There was a good selection of foods for the continental breakfast; when possible, the hotel gets food from local merchants.

The only issue was that our room door did not fit properly, so there was an open gap at the top of the door - but there was no stray noise nor light, so this was not a problem.

There isn't a hair dryer in the room, but there is a bottle opener!

There isn't a fitness center or pool, but if you want to swim, you can get a pass to swim at the Aspen Lodge for free.

I would definitely stay there again.

We planned on staying at the Shoreline for one night but liked is so much we stayed for two. It has the best location and patio in Grand Marais. The rooms are comfortable and staff very friendly and helpful. We will definately be returning.

“Location good, but disappointed”

Location is good, out the back door and down to the Lake. We were very disappointed in this hotel. It was old and over priced. No attendent on duty in the evenings, overnight or early morning. No air conditioning so the windows must be left open. All the seagull, traffic and people noise can not be shut out. The beds were horribly soft and sunken.
