“A great view of lake but conditions in and around hotel were very, very poor.”

I have stayed at the hotel for the past 40 years. These last years the hotel has been going down in quality of service, cleanliness, repair of items broken, etc. It looked like a trash house from the outside with broken awnings, screens, broken tiles on stairs, and rotted beams. When talking with manager of property about items mentioned above, he said the owner did not want to spend much money for the repairs. The hotel needs a COMPLETE overhauling. From now on I will look for other accommodations in the area as there are many not associated with this hotel ownership.

“Great location, but rooms need a facelift”

Location and service was great, but rooms are quite dated back to the 1970s feel and are quite expensive. Rooms are clean and the view is great.

“Time to renovate!”

The good: comfy bed, great location.
The bad: worn, dirty rug, stopped up sink, no bed lamp, cramped bathroom, no elevator.
The ugly: peeling wallpaper, rusty heater in bathroom and rusty door hinges, bird droppings on patio furniture, neglected plantings.

“OK, but a little dated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 May 2010

I was looking for a hotel to stay at in Grand Marais and a quick Google search turned up the "Shoreline Motel". I did not see any pictures before I booked, just the location. I was looking for a place right on the lake.

Both rooms that face the lake and rooms that do not face the lake are available. It was about $20 more for a room with a view. On the positive side, it is RIGHT on the shoreline. What a location! The view was gorgeous and I could hear the waves crashing all night long which was quite relaxing.

Now the negatives...The place appears to be a remodeled apartment building or perhaps an old hospital of some sort built in the 50's or 60's. Corrugated sun shades and fussy old windows detract from an otherwise beautiful location. There is no air conditioning so it is likely to be a bit warm during the summer.

The room was OK but nothing spectacular. I had to laugh at the PINK bed sheets! That and the old bathroom fixtures (at least they weren't pink) reminded me a bit of being at Grandma's house...

Despite the dated decor, I found the bed and the chairs in the room to be quite comfortable. My room had a king size bed. It might actually be a bit TOO soft for some people but I slept pretty well.

I would probably stay here again but if you're looking for modern elegance, look elsewhere.

“Nice hotel in a fabulous location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2010

We stayed at the Shoreline while on a New Year's Eve ski trip to Lutsen and had a great time. Sure, the hotel was a bit outdated but it was clean, comfortable, the location was unbelievable (right on the water and a very easy walk to downtown) and the service was good. Shannah, a front desk representative, was especially helpful and friendly. Thanks!
