“kind of a dump in the woods”

Do not be fooled by the ranking here and the planted praise. We trusted the same and were very disappointed. The lodge has rusty old scaffolding around it. Our cabin had a porch that hadn't been painted in decades, with holes in the siding to let Gunflint Trail flies and mosquitos in whenever they wished to be there. Weeds and scrub brush surrounded the cabin and made the short distance to the lake unpleasant.
We were able to get most of our money back when we said we would tell Visa that there was no fireplace in our cabin even though the website said there would be.
We were very grateful not to have spent the night being eaten.

“Beautiful, Rustic, Private, Clean, LOVED IT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2009

I can't begin to say enough of our experience at Old Northwood’s Lodge. I spent one night there with my teenaged children and was immediately impressed by the Lodge Owner, Gale who welcomed us and made us feel like we were coming home. The Lodge itself is breathtaking and a sight to behold and must be viewed with one's own eyes to truly appreciate the beauty and love that was put into the construction of it. The cabin we stayed in (Cabin #3) was within 5 or 6 feet from the water and we were ESTATIC when we arrived in it. All amenities required for cooking one's own meal are there, it was IMACULATE, cozy and very homey.

The boats are easily assessable and we had a grand afternoon trolling around the beautiful lake admiring the beauty. Gale even provided us with a lake map and his thoughtfulness was very much appreciated.

We can't wait to go back and plan on many visits to this wonderful lodge and making more family memories there.

“Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2008

The setting is beautiful and rustic. The property is steps for the shore and canoes are easily accessible. Our host (Gale & Kelley) were fantastic, they were available at all times but also let your stay be totally private. The food at the lodge is 5 star, we could barely walk away from the table! If you’re looking for the ultimate Northwoods experience this is a great place to enjoy it!

“Excellent Stay - food was superb!”

This log cabin lodge was a welcoming sight to the group of six traveling into the Boundary Water Canoe Area. We stayed in the three available rooms inside Old Northwoods Lodge the night before departing into the BWCA and the night we got back. The rooms were the perfect size for two, very cozy with comfortable beds. The highlight of the stay were the freshly prepared, home cooked, northwood meals. We highly recommend the beer batter fried walleye for dinner and the wild blueberry pancakes with maple sausage for breakfast. The generous hospitality and roaring fireplace were very comforting to come back to after being out on the trail. We hope to go back this winter.

  • Liked — The rooms, meals and general ambience.
  • Disliked — There were very few other guests.

“A wnderful place in the woods!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2006

The Old Northwoods Inn is a beautiful place to stay. The owner Gale & manager Kelly make you feel like you're part of the family. The lodge has a beautiful 2 story fireplace that is open from the lobby area to the dinning room. They serve great breakfasts & dinners are unbeliveably excellent. We stayed in cabin # 1. It was nice & cozy & most important clean. It was nice to sit by the fireplace & listen to the loons on a cool autum night.
