“Best Location on the Gunflint”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

Centrally located on the Gunflint Trail. Peaceful. The cabins are decent. Theres some fish. Bears and other wildlife noise heard at night. Trail through sereen meadow grass in its natural state, surrounding the lodge and cabins. This is a 100 year old building site it is timeless. Remnants of the original home on the site (Chimney Stack) are still off to the side of the lodge. A real step back in time. Something you find in the 1800s. Lots of hiking trails, vast wilderness. " Locals" are accomodating and friendly at nearby Lodges as well, Great Food and Drinks! Make the best of things!

“We will be back each and every year.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2011

If you are looking for a luxurious place to stay, this may not be it. But, you are looking for extremely nice proprietors in a lodge/cabin in the middle of nature- You have found your place in the Old Northwoods Lodge!

My family and I were enchanted by this area and this lodge. We travel often, but few places we have been showed the hospitality and the charm of this lodge. It isn't a fancy B&B and it isn't a standardized hotel. But, the Boundary Waters' edge is right out the backdoor. The food is outstanding! The cabin we stayed in had a fireplace and a little kitchenette.

There is no place better for drinking in the fall colors.

“Vacation from hell”

Arrived to find the place overgrown with weeds and generally in a state of disrepair! We attempted to make the best of it since we had driven a long way to stay here--and we had nowhere else to go. Our cabin was dirty with very little room. Screens were either not on the windows or were in such bad shape we swatted at mosquitos all night long. Beds were so old they had no firmness left in them. Entire place was overgrown with either weeds or brushy trees that held in the heat and the mosquitos. The comments on their website about newly renovated definitiely did not apply to anything we saw especially the cabins! Never so happy to be home. Should have headed the earlier review that called it a "dump in the woods" becasue that was spot on. Next time I will know better. Dont book unless you have low expectations!

“Might want to call before you plan this as part of your trip”

After several trips to the Gunflint Trail in recent times, we have yet to find this this place open . We have good memories of delicious meals here in the past, but they seem to be only marginally still in business. Repeated phone calls mostly went unanswered; there isn't an answering machine to leave a message. This was a beautiful lodge with great food at one time, but perhaps they are in a transition stage. Don't plan this into a trip unless you've made contact and can be assured they will be open. That isn't a given.

“kind of a dump in the woods”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

Do not be fooled by the ranking here and the planted praise. We trusted the same and were very disappointed. The lodge has rusty old scaffolding around it. Our cabin had a porch that hadn't been painted in decades, with holes in the siding to let Gunflint Trail flies and mosquitos in whenever they wished to be there. Weeds and scrub brush surrounded the cabin and made the short distance to the lake unpleasant.
We were able to get most of our money back when we said we would tell Visa that there was no fireplace in our cabin even though the website said there would be.
We were very grateful not to have spent the night being eaten.
