“Worst Little [--] in Brooklyn”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2008

Check in and taken to room on second floor. We immediately hear moaning from next room and pounding on wall. We requested an advertised renovated room since the first room was filthy and has never been renovated. We moved to room on first floor which was in even worst condition than the original room. We stayed because it was late and we didn't know where to go. We put our suitcases in front of the door because it did not lock and we both wore socks to bed because we were afraid to walk on the carpet. We prayed that we didn't get attacked by bed bugs or something worse. The next morning we were out of there by the crack of dawn.

DON'T STAY HERE. SLEEP IN YOUR CAR.

“You get what you pay for!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2008

Okay, the old saying "You get what you pay for" certainly applies here. For the price you get a room, which is reasonably clean and not too small (small rooms are typical in New York City.) They only had smoking rooms available, so I guess it isn't fair of my to complain of the stench exuding from the hallways and rooms. I bought a can of Febreeze and it did not help at all! Opening a window did help.

The PROBLEMS.

1. They have 150 rooms and 5 irons (NO IRONING BOARDS). They advertise that they have irons, which is not true. I tried AN ENTIRE morning to get an iron. The front desk staff during the day was totally unhelpful. The worker (with a mouthful of food and who seemed disturbed by the intrusion of me requesting an iron) said it was not his problem. ARGGHHHH Talk about rude. So, if you need an iron, you better bring your own! Same goes for a hair dryer that they advertise they have. Guess what? They only have a limited number of those too!

2. The continental breakfast. My 14-year-old went down to the restaurant and tried to get food. He asked the man in the restaurant what they had and was told "I NO cook you anything, you need to be a guest" He didn't say you need a voucher from the front desk nor did ANYONE at the front desk tell us when we checked in that you need a voucher for breakfast NOR does it state anywhere in the literature that you need to obtain a voucher. I complained at the front desk and was told unfortunately the restaurant was independently owned and there was nothing they could do about my son not getting breakfast. ARGGHHHHH

3. They only put 2 bath towels in the room and we had 3 people. So I called and asked for more. They said someone would bring them up, I waited an hour no one came. I walked down to the front desk and asked again, and the clerk called and asked the staff again, they said they were too busy. So someone from the front desk eventually brought them up ANOTHER hour later. ARRRRGGGHHHHH

In conclusion. If alls you want is a place to lay your head and you don't care about the smell of stale cigarettes (which is in non-smoking as well), you dont mind if you can't get the breakfast they advertise they have and you bring all your own amenities then this place will do. If you want friendly helpful staff, a continental breakfast and all the amenities of a typical 2-star hotel then i suggest you pay a little more and stay in Jersey City and take the PATH train to where you want to go.

Where can i start?????

The hallway on the bottom floor looks like you're in a scary movie. When my man and i went there for the summer, we actually had to ask to change rooms. In the 1st room, the bathroom was dirty and there was a "stain" on the sheets. Can u say yuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. The second room was on the bottom floor, in the scary movie hallway. We had to try to stay on a certain are on the bed just to be comfortable. The door wasnt even. You can see a little peep hole on the top. They so need a serious paint job. With all the money they get, you would think they would do something about it.

The staff were wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. The room was not the worst I've stayed in. It wasn't disgusting but it wasn't clean. We went out and bought Febreeze anti-microbial and a scented candle and cleaned up the bathroom. The bed was pretty good. The sheets were clean and the bed didn t smell. The mattress was firm. The TV had sound but no picture. In their defense, we were too tired to contact the front desk to resolve the issue. The worst things, I would say, were the bathroom and the smell when we arrived (resolved with some cleaning, Febreeze and candle). Oh yeah, you can not control the air-conditioning, but the window does open. The best part was that the sheets were clean and the staff were very nice. We won't stay here again.

“RECENT review”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2008

Date of Stay: 2008 08 23. I travel. A Lot. I usually stay at Newark Airport hotels when I want to explore Manhattan for the weekend. I've never seen Coney Is. so I wanted to stay in Brooklyn.

This property is typical of a vintage hotel ( the elevator has two sets of doors) and it does need some paint and sprucing up. The hotel has one large parking lot and rooms are accessed from the lobby. Some women consider this a safety improvement compared to Motel rooms each with their own parking spot adjacent to the door. I never gave this any thought before. The neighborhood is nice and security is not a concern. The hotel is just off BELT and its nearest neighbor is a separate apt. bldg. You can easily look at street view with Google maps. 3867 Shore Pkwy.

My room was no different than in any other two star Motel 6 type hotel. A tray in the room suggests that this was formerly a Choice branded Comfort inn. The carpets were clean, tv and service modern. Our floor was non smoking, and wireless routers were on each floor, both new additions since new management. The pool, patio, and room pictures were accurate.
There seems to be some renovations in the unopened bar.

At $135/night, it is hard to find cheaper anywhere in NY and I wouldn't stay at those since I REFUSE to use a shared bathroom. Manhattan will be $280 or higher, sometimes for a tiny little box of a room. For those of you that want an explanation of continental breakfast; this is typically Coffee or tea, juice, toast, bagel or muffin, and fruit. Today it was bananas. There is a kitchen and they can cook eggs and bacon if you'd rather have that.

Regarding the numerous reviews; I would suggest you disregard the ones older than one year. NO hoodlums, prostitutes, or loud noise in the halls or rooms. My recent stay at Atlantic City Tropicana had ALL of these. Bottom line; if your budget will allow Doubletree or Four Seasons and this is where you normally stay, you wont be happy in ANY two star hotel including this one. If you are on a budget, this hotel is fine. My major complaint was excessively hard beds. We both work up several times and my ribs hurt. We talked to management and this would be the deciding factor if I use this hotel again. Love to hear your honest not whiny reviews.
