We just returned from an extended Columbus Day Weekend trip to NYC, staying at Emilia's Retreat. The stay was exactly what I had hoped it would be and would recommend it friends looking to visit New York.
Donna was very nice and helpful. We only saw her at check-in and check-out but that was not a problem for us. I'm sure we could have seen her more if we wanted. We stayed in the 2 bedroom apartment in the basement which has its own entrance, so there really isn't a reason to bump into anyone else.
The only way we knew that Donna had been in the apartment was because of the delicious breads and pastries that showed up for us each day. We appreciated the variety and the quanity was much more than we could eat. Since we are not coffee drinkers, we could have used more milk and orange juice but just picked some up at the store on the way back from the subway. I am sure that she would have provided more if we had taken the time to ask. She says to leave her a note on her counter if you need anything...we were just in a hurry to get going each day.
The space is more than ample and the beds were really comfortable. Other than noise from the train, it is a very quiet neighborhood. The train noise did wake us but we are not used to the sounds of the city. I have no doubt that we couldn't have found a quieter place to stay in the city so that is just something you need to expect when you travel to a different place. It felt a lot like staying at a favorite aunt's house. I will repeat what some others have said regarding upkeep. Everything is clean but not pristine. If finding a bit of dust in the corners will bother you, this may not be the place for you. That said, I felt a whole lot cleaner here than in some of the better and more expensive hotels I've stayed at!
The subway is a very short and easy walk. We felt safe the entire time whether it was day or night.
I would absolutely recommend Emilia's Place to friends or family visiting New York and will stay here again if we ever travel back.
