I arrived in Fairbanks on the scenic, twelve hour train ride from Anchorage (a must-do on your Alaska Travel Bucket List) where, my gracious host, Dawn Andrews, was waiting for me in a warm and very capable 4WD truck which I have dubbed The White Knight! She whisked me away to her lovely and charming log mansion (freshly chinked), overlooking the winter-white Chena River. The frozen tracks decorating the river side and bank belong to Kevin, the WILD, but resident-tolerant moose. Kevin likes to greet his "guests" via the expansive dining room window, especially in the wee early morning hours. After a hearty and delicious HOMEMADE breakfast, a brisk walk around the fir-line neighborhood will clear your woolen head and presto - the day unfolds like a well-told story. There are unlimited amount of activities to participate in and around Fairbanks (do not forget to trek up to Chena Hot Springs: another Alaska Bucket List Must-Do!) and Dawn is more than happy to help you find your own travel niche of wonders, not to mention the delicious Thai restaurants that will make you feel, with your first bite, that you are in the exotic Far East. Dawn suggested I check out the annual Fairbanks Ice Carving Festival (runs from February to March) where world-class artists coax their inspirations out of mammoth-size blocks of ice. I felt I was experiencing the mysteries of the mythical Northern Lights - especially if you go at night! (Please google: website address was too long to include.) Warm, cozy beds, with reassuring, staunch, Paul Bunyan-sized logs, keep out the Arctic cold and protect the weary traveler after a long day of exploration. Sleep deeply and dream of new adventures and days to be spent discovering Alaska's deeply cherished secrets. It's what I did and I loved every minute of my Alaskan Adventure! Thanks Dawn and Sydney for opening up your home and being the icing on my Baked Alaska Cake!
