We thought our impression might change several weeks after our stay, but it did not. We stayed two nights in the lodge, described as “classically designed.” It’s less charming than old. The lodge is surrounded by 82 or so cottages. Our king-bedroom in the lodge was reminiscent of 1960s (or earlier) décor with dreary floral pictures, a small bath, little space for clothes and no elevator to a second-floor room. The crowning touch was an enormous but strangely managed breakfast room called Chena’s Fine Dining. It was a huge and hugely deserted room with no clear explanation of what’s happening. Everyone including us arrives with a puzzled expression. A hostess needs to explain since there is no signage: That row of items is the full breakfast; this row of items is the continental breakfast ($7.95) which most “chain” hotels include in the price. This clearly isn’t a “chain” hotel. Late afternoon, we chose to have hors d’oeuvres and drinks at the River’s Edge’s nearby Chena Alaskan Grill. Okay, but slow service in at a tight corner spot near the front door.
