27 Jun 2009 | Trip type: Friends getaway

A friend and I booked Under The Rainbow for three nights recenty. The guest house is not in the best neighborhood and I would never walk from the house to the historic area. We always drove, about a ten minute drive.

One of the owners used his master key and went into my frineds room as he was getting out of the shower. He was standing in the bathroom when my friend got out of the shower. He left when my friend yelled at him. When confronted, the other owner said, "Well, if what you say is true..." He said that he would hide his master key again, that the other owner kept finding them. We decieded to leave. Kevin, the owner still charged us for that night although we were leaving due to being afraid to spend another night there. Kevin told me he thought we were overreacting. For Kevin's information, his partner broke the law by entering the room. It is a landlord-tennat agreement. The landlord cannot enter the room without the renter's permission unless there is an emergency. Looking at someone when they are getting out of the shower is no emergency. I did not argue the night's rent as I just wanted to get out of there. I always support a gay owned business whenever I can, but I would never ever reccomend Under the Rainbow.

Great B & B off the beaten path

My boyfriend and I booked a quick weekend getaway, only a week in advance, and found the owners to be quite accommodating and happy to have us. This B & B is a little off the beaten path, but is well within walking distance (1.5 miles) of the River Front. It is near highway 80, which is the main route to Tybee Island.

Our room was clean and ready when we arrived. Kevin (one of the owners) was very helpful with maps and directions to the city's various attractions. The house was beautifully restored and in great condition. It was quiet, aside from some usual street noise and another late arriving guest. Breakfast was simple; consisting of a selection of dry cereals, milk, fruit, muffins, and coffee.

Parking was interesting... The city cleans one side of the street Friday night, and the other side the following night. We had to be mindful of which side of the street we were to park. There was a lot (which seemed to be owned by a church) on the adjacent corner. We were told we could use the lot, but I felt a little uncomfortable leaving my car there.

In all, I would recommend this B & B and I would stay there again. It was not a 4 star hotel, but I wasn't expecting it to be. I am quite happy with our weekend spent at Under the Rainbow.

When checking in, we immeditaly realized the abandoned looking home across the street and began to wonder about what we had gotten into. The front door is kept locked and you have to be buzzed in after waiting for the owners to open up. The home is a nice house with five bedrooms each with their own bathroom. It appeared that we were the only ones staying or very few other guests were staying over the weekend. This house is NOT close to any of the venues in Savannah and are a long walk or you will need to drive to the river. The room was clean, but slightly taddy and needs some TLC. Our room opened onto an outside deck, but the deck had not been washed and the table and deck dusty and dirty. Our host showed us to our room and then we really did not see him again until the next morning. The morning breakfast is cold cereal, juice directly from the jug, and doughnuts that looked like they came from the local 7-11. If there is nothing else available, this would be an ok choice, but we probably will not return.

My partner and I booked a room here in July 2008 and it was awful. We stayed one night and then left for a hotel in the historic district.

A friend of the owner's let us into the property-- the owner was nowhere to be found--and watched as we struggled our way upstairs with all of our luggage.

The bathtub was so stained I rubbed it down with a washcloth to make sure I wasn't showering in someone else's dirt.

There was no one to provide recommendations for places to eat or directions to downtown, which was a good ten-minute drive away-- no where near walking distance.

There was an abandoned house across the street.

The TV and internet connection didn't work and breakfast consisted of a few danishes from Costco and a pot of coffee with powdered creamer!

And we paid $150 for this.

If you go to Savannah, consider the Marshall House. Do not stay at this B&B.

We are done with B&Bs. There are absolutely no standards anymore. He’s my unbiased review of Under The Rainbow:

The Good: Kevin and his partner did a good job remodeling the property. Kevin himself is a nice guy and if you like talking politics, he’s all ears. Kevin has a cute dog too.

The Bad: Kevin is not caring for the property properly. See the pictures. That is not stenciling on the light fixture, its dust. The stains on the pillow case, broken lamp and useless TV remote are a few more LIGHT examples.

Kevin has strong political views but should really not display them in public view, especially the profane stuff.

Kevin did explain it would be a “Continental” breakfast only but did he need to serve to fruit right out of the plastic container it came in?

The Ugly: With the exception of the historic district, Savannah is a very poor city. Under The Rainbow is in a rough side of town. So rough, the first level porch furniture is chained down. The pictures tell it all.

If the bottom line is, would I stay at Under The Rainbow again, I would have to say no.

Wife and I have come across too many B&Bs like this. Where are the B&B Standards Police!
