“Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We spent a week in the Big Bend, West Texas area and spent a night at the Limpia Hotel. The hotel has a recent change in ownership, and has undergone extensive renovaton, while retaining it's charm as a historic hotel. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and made every effort to ensure that we had a great time. The hotel resturant was closed for renovation, but should be open within the next month or so.The great room was very welcoming as was the sun room. We will definitely include this hotel in our future trips to the West Texas area.

Room Tip: All rooms in the hotel that are not occupied are open for viewing, and we selected the room that we...

“Christmas Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Our daughter and son-in-law surprised us with an enchanting Christmas present - a two night stay at Hotel Limpia. We found the staff to be friendly and very accommodating. The suite was absolutely charming. We had plenty of space and quiet for reading. Plenty of fun within walking distance. We enjoyed ourselves so much we booked an extra night and made reservations for a stay next Christmas.

“great family gathering”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We decided to spend Christmas with various family members from around the country in the Big Bend area and chose Ft. Davis as our home-base.

Even though we were the only group (of 3) that stayed at the Limpia, the staff were very welcoming and graciously offered the hotel lobby for family gatherings around a very cheery fireplace (gas, not firewood). It was also a great place to meet travelers from other parts of the country. Fresh, delicious coffee was always available.

The lobby is furnished/decorated in keeping with the unique character of this hotel; in fact, I overheard one local resident remark that one of the chairs in the lobby came from his grandfather's home in Ft. Davis.

We stayed here in order to explore Big Bend and the surrounding area of Alpine and Marfa, so we were not very interested in the tvs. One family member turned them on occasionally and there was no problem with them. We stayed in a 2-bedroom suite with full kitchen. The beds were quite comfortable, and the claw-foot tub in the king bed/bath was a treat. The only thing lacking was a full set of silverware, but that was a minor concern and was soon remedied. The heater in the king bedroom/bath was excellent (& necessary!); the one in the queen bed/bath was noisy but effective. Plenty of hot water for all (mindful to take shifts, with a full contigent of 5 during a few days). Very convenient. Housekeeping was very attentive. We had several family dogs with us; very nice to travel to this area and be able to bring our dogs who love to hike with us (not in Big Bend, of course, but at Big Bend Ranch State Park and other areas)!

We had internet service both in the suite and in the lobby. Worked fine (though a bit spotty in the suite) except for the last day, when a fiber optic cable had been cut somewhere in West Texas and all service was out in the Ft. Davis area!

We would definitely stay here again. It was comfortable, the staff were very welcoming and accommodating, and we often made use of the kitchen during our stay for an early breakfast or snacks at night as we all gathered to visit. Lots of good restaurants in Ft. Davis; good, home-cooking (pizza, Mexican food, a deli in the local health food/specialty foods store, excellent coffee shop, reasonable meals at the drugstore across the street). Not to mention the various places to eat in Alpine and Marfa--and even Lajitas. The restaurant at the Limpia should be open soon; renovations are on-going--eager to see how it turns out, with access to their lovely central patio.

This is a great place to stay if you are interested in exploring this area and have several days to spend. An easy day-trip to Big Bend, but get an early start if you hope to go on an extensive hike. We were treated to snow in Big Bend; a beautiful sight, and one none of us will soon forget!

“Lost its charm”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

How times have changed. My wife and I first stayed at the Limpia Hotel in 1995 and every year after that until 2002. In 2003 I brought my 2 year old son and the two of us stayed several nights. Twice during that period I brought friends and always recommended it to others.

I finally made it back again this year with my wife and now two sons. I have to say I will never return unless I hear that things have gotten better than what we experienced on this trip.
We stayed in the main hotel in a two room suite with a kitchen. We opened the door to the room and were immediately met with an unpleasant musty smell. We made the mistake of cooking our own breakfast and found the kitchen to be a disaster. We resorted to using paper plates that we brought so we didn’t have to wash dishes before we used them. It seemed as though they stopped cleaning the place years ago as there were layers of dirt everywhere including the kitchen counter.

To make matters worse we were told at check-in that the restaurant and gift shop were closed for remodeling due to the hotel being sold recently. They didn’t think that bit of information was important enough to put on their website so people would know before making a reservation.

So rather than being a historic hotel, it’s now just an old hotel. I’m guessing we won’t be the only ones disappointed with the current conditions.

David Schreiber, Owner at The Hotel Limpia, responded to this review

We appreciate the guest taking the time to write a review. However, we would like to respond to several points. As to the cleanliness of the kitchen, the suite that the guest stayed in has an older kitchen. The guest may have mistaken dirt for wear and tear. I personally inspected the kitchen upon reading this review and found it to be clean. The musty odor may have been the result of the central heating being turned on for the first time in the season.
Unfortunately, the guest never brought any of these issues to our attention during their stay and appeared to be satisfied at the time of check out. We would have made every effort to satisfy the guest had they simply let us know that they were unhappy with any aspect of their stay. Customer satisfaction is our number one priority at the Limpia.
Additionally, we purchased the Limpia on October 27th and are working steadily to improve all aspects of the guest experience. This includes an all new restaurant and bar, Blue Mountain Bistro, a well as an improved Limpia Gifts. Limpia Gifts is now open and we expect to open Blue Mountain Bistro by early February. We will also be making improvements to individual guest rooms over time as well as restoring the hotel lobby to its original 1912 appearance.
We apologize for the lack of up to date information on the old website - technical issues prevented our accessing the website until late in November. However, there are numerous restaurants within walking distance of the hotel and our other gift shop, Javelinas and Hollyhocks, was open throughout the guest's stay.
We are sorry that the guest was not pleased with their stay. However, we are unable to remedy a situation unless we know about it!

“Historic and comfortable”

This hotel has a cowboy look. It was very comfortable and has spacious rooms. It has a nice patio, pool, sun room and porches with rocking chairs. Everything is only a few steps away, the restaurant, the store and shops. We really enjoy our stay at this place.
