We decided to spend Christmas with various family members from around the country in the Big Bend area and chose Ft. Davis as our home-base.
Even though we were the only group (of 3) that stayed at the Limpia, the staff were very welcoming and graciously offered the hotel lobby for family gatherings around a very cheery fireplace (gas, not firewood). It was also a great place to meet travelers from other parts of the country. Fresh, delicious coffee was always available.
The lobby is furnished/decorated in keeping with the unique character of this hotel; in fact, I overheard one local resident remark that one of the chairs in the lobby came from his grandfather's home in Ft. Davis.
We stayed here in order to explore Big Bend and the surrounding area of Alpine and Marfa, so we were not very interested in the tvs. One family member turned them on occasionally and there was no problem with them. We stayed in a 2-bedroom suite with full kitchen. The beds were quite comfortable, and the claw-foot tub in the king bed/bath was a treat. The only thing lacking was a full set of silverware, but that was a minor concern and was soon remedied. The heater in the king bedroom/bath was excellent (& necessary!); the one in the queen bed/bath was noisy but effective. Plenty of hot water for all (mindful to take shifts, with a full contigent of 5 during a few days). Very convenient. Housekeeping was very attentive. We had several family dogs with us; very nice to travel to this area and be able to bring our dogs who love to hike with us (not in Big Bend, of course, but at Big Bend Ranch State Park and other areas)!
We had internet service both in the suite and in the lobby. Worked fine (though a bit spotty in the suite) except for the last day, when a fiber optic cable had been cut somewhere in West Texas and all service was out in the Ft. Davis area!
We would definitely stay here again. It was comfortable, the staff were very welcoming and accommodating, and we often made use of the kitchen during our stay for an early breakfast or snacks at night as we all gathered to visit. Lots of good restaurants in Ft. Davis; good, home-cooking (pizza, Mexican food, a deli in the local health food/specialty foods store, excellent coffee shop, reasonable meals at the drugstore across the street). Not to mention the various places to eat in Alpine and Marfa--and even Lajitas. The restaurant at the Limpia should be open soon; renovations are on-going--eager to see how it turns out, with access to their lovely central patio.
This is a great place to stay if you are interested in exploring this area and have several days to spend. An easy day-trip to Big Bend, but get an early start if you hope to go on an extensive hike. We were treated to snow in Big Bend; a beautiful sight, and one none of us will soon forget!
