“Impressive for what it is!”

My partner and I stayed in one of the renovated rooms... and were impressed with size of the room. We stayed 2 nights, and thought we'd be fine staying in that size room (2 double beds) for a week or so. We LOVED the proximity to West Texas attractions. We were a short drive to the McDonald Observatory and Marfa, and liked calling the Indian Lodge our cental location. The views are great, and the staff was extra friendly. Now, we're not sure how gay-friendly the other guests might be as this is a state lodge, but we didn't exactly walk around holding hands either. If you are gay and wonder, I'd feel completely fine staying here again. Oh, and the restaurant was decent... proper prices for average food - definitely nothiing to complain about. The only room for improvement would be a nicer matress, but hey - this isn't the ritz.

“Fantastic Find”

We only booked one night at this hotel on our way to Big Bend, but wish we had stayed two or three nights. Most of this historic hotel was built by the CCC in the 30's during the depression and has been beautifully preserved. If you stay in the historic part (which I consider a must) you will also see that all the furniture was also made by craftsmen at that time as well. Although the historic rooms have a fireplace and they are no longer functional, it adds definite charm to the rooms. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were very clean.

The hotel has a very nice restaurant with reasonable prices that serves three meals a day. It also has many lovely patios, a large courtyard and nice pool. There are lots of places to hike as well. This hotel is part of the Texas parks system and you have to go through them to reserve, but it is an easy process.

The hotel is 20 minutes from the McDonald Observatory and I highly recommend you visit the observatory as well. The observatory has a really cool tour in the day time where you actually get to see the big telescopes and find out how they operate. The "Twilight Program" is also worthwhile as they teach you how to use the night sky maps. On the weekends there are "Star Parties", but unfortunately it rained one of the rare occassions while we were there. For the Star Party unless you are there during spring break, I wouldn't recommend getting your tickets ahead of time because they are non-refundable and their "B" program was not worth it to us.

“Fort Davis weekend with my sisters”

Lovely stay at Indian Lodge with my 4 sisters. We travel twice yearly and we had a wonderful time here. Swam at nearby Balmorhea State Park, and enjoyed the Star Party at McDonald Observatory. Would definately recommend.

“Half motel, half hotel, completely charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2010

Comfortable and spacious rooms set in a cool adobe building created by the CCC, this place is worth the drive and a long stay. Ft. Davis is nothing to write home about, but for those who love history and the outdoors, the Indial Lodge makes the town bearable. Sure, the sheets and towels aren't plush, and they have lined the ceiling with bamboo (hmmm?) and not native wood, but everything works (except the fireplaces in every room, sadly). The on-site restaurant is staffed by friendly, efficient folks and the food is just fine (probably as good as anything else you'll get in Ft. Davis). Ample walking areas are just outside the door -- and the McDonald Observatory is just 30 minutes away. Wonderful!
