“Beautiful hotel: Beware Room 112”

The Indian Lodge Hotel is beautifully nestled in the mountains. We stayed in room 112 in the original lodge. It is a very nice room, great layout with a make-up vanity outside the bath and an ample size bedroon. The furniture is very hard, but we brought a couple of chairs in from the patio and they were quite comfortable. The first night was great, but the next night a couple moved into the room above us. Not only could you hear the floor creaking loudly, you could hear snoring at night from above. Overall we found the Indian Lodge to be very charming and in a good location to explore Ft Davis, the McDonald Observatory and Balmorhea Springs. The Black Bear Restaurant is only steps away from any room and offers good american-style food (great breakfast). If I were to take day trips to the south, I would stay in Alpine, however.

Room Tip: book an upstairs room

“Unique”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

We spent a night in the old section of the hotel. It was a very peaceful place, and we enjoyed reading the history and admiring the hand-carved furnishings in the room. It was a bit chilly to enjoy the terrace, but we had a great view of the sunrise in the morning. Would highly recommend staying here if traveling through the area.

Room Tip: We really liked the historical section, but do note that rooms on the 2nd floor can hear all noise f...

Very pleasant stay. Lots of stairs. Not much communication with outside world. Very quiet.

“Nice old lodge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011

We stayed at the lodge for 2 nights. Following the advice of other reviewers we were looking for a room on the top floor of the old section. The only one available was the suite, #121. It's a very charming room with a nice view of the valley below but a few details made the experience not as nice as it could have been. The bedroom has 2 double beds and we would have been ok with that but the beds take up most of the floor space making it seem cramped (the chunky furniture, while in keeping with the ambiance, doesn't help... I banged my knee and shins a few times on the corners). To make things worse the mattresses were very soft and bouncy - not in a good way - and both my husband and I had trouble sleeping on them. Also notice that unless you have Veizon there is practically no cell service (that could be a good thing if you are there to get away from it all...). Overall the place is very charming but could use some improvements.

“Charming Historical Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 November 2011

This lovely hotel was built in the 1930's by the CCC and has been lovingly restored and maintained. The rustic charm and details are throughout from the lobby to the rooms. Be sure to read the letter from the son whose father worked on the building that is posted on the wall by the fireplace in the lobby. The Black Bear Restaurant is unpretentious and has great food. We had a delicious dinner and the breakfast was the best of our 35 day trip. Be sure to bring your own hair dryer. This is a beautiful, peaceful, quiet, restful hotel near historic F. Davis. We were wishing we had spent more than one night here. Enjoy!

Room Tip: They have comfortable ADA handicapped rooms near the lobby.
