We arrived about one PM on this past rainy Sunday afternoon. We were the only guests for the evening but our rooms were not ready. That surprised us. We were told that it would be another hour or so. So we had to walk downtown in the rain to kill some time.
We had reserved two rooms. Ours was the Columbia room upstairs. That was nice. Our daughter, son in law and two grand daughters had been allocated the Garden Room in back. We took offense when a number of comments were made about the fact that we had two children with us and that it would be best if they were in the back room, etc. After seeing the smallness of the Garden Room, our daughter asked to be moved to the larger, more expensive and separate Carriage House. That was much better for them.
We choose bed and breakfast establishments as they are usually more personable than traditional hotels; and also for the rooms and usually a remarkable and satisfying breakfast.
The breakfast served on Monday morning was very disappointing. It consisted of meager portions (child size or less) of overcooked scrambled eggs and undercooked homefries. The coffee was weak and almost undrinkable. The only choices of juice were pineapple and tomato. The server did not ask if we wanted more. We were the only guests but she acted as though she was preserving provisions as opposed to satisfying customers.
Monday was a sunny day and we left early after breakfast to take in the attractions in Astoria and the surrounding area. We left the "service please" tag on the door to our room. We stopped for some real coffee at a nice place downtown and launched our day.
We had a delightful day visiting the River Museam, Disappointment Cape lighthouse, Fort Stevens, and other sites, and a great lunch at Baked Alaska.
On our return, we were very disappointed that the rooms had not been tended to; beds had not been made, no fresh towels, shampoos, etc. Perhaps the B&B does not provide those services but that was not made clear.
There were a number of other guests staying Monday night, including the owners. We looked forward to a better breakfast on Tuesday morning. We were again very disappointed. This time it was again meager portions - this time of two silver dollar pancakes with some sort of fruit topping (the server was trying this out for the first time), the undercooked home fries, weak coffee, orange and tomato juice. There was syrup available but they were two kinds of sugar free. My daughter asked if there was more but she was told by the server that she needed to preserve them as there were other guests.
We checked out and left as soon as we could.
The Rosebriar is a very nice building, nice location, nice rooms. What was so disappointing is that it can be improved with just a little effort. The owners need to improve room freshing services and serve a hearty well cooked breakfast. Especially at the prices charged for the rooms.
