“Not bad at all..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2011

I must say, I was a little weary of this hotel after reading some of the more negative reviews on this site. However, I was very pleasantly surprised for a number of reasons. The room was only $99 a night and included two queen size beds. Compared to other hotels in Astoria, Rivershore is quite cheap.

First, for the negatives:

- No A/C. However, I was here just a few days ago (middle of July) and the room was quite comfortable at night. There are two windows in the room, one facing the highway and the other facing the back of the hotel. Obviously, you don't want to leave your valuables vulnerable by leaving the front window open. However, with just the back window open, the room was quite comfortable. There is a heater in the room for the winter months.

- The noise is definitely the worst part of the room. The motel is right off a highway, and traffic seems to never cease. I slept in the front room (near the highway) and had no trouble sleeping. However, if you normally need total quiet to sleep then it might be smart to bring either headphones or foam earplugs.

Overall, the hotel was very clean. The furniture is dated but certainly clean.

The continental breakfast consisted of Orange Juice/Coffee, and various Otis Spunkmeyer muffins and packaged danishes. Not extensive at all, but a good snack. I went down towards the last 30 minutes of breakfast and the supply was full. The front desk staff was very nice and helpful throughout the whole stay and did an excellent job replenishing the breakfast supply.

By the way, they only give soap (no shampoo or conditioner), so be sure to bring the two.

Overall, I would recommend this place for Astoria. It's far cheaper than a lot of the other hotels (many of which seem to be of similar quality), and everything was clean. What more can you want?

“A return visit and not disappointed”

Rooms are clean & comfortable but a little bit tired, but the location is convenient and whilst it's on a main road the traffic noise is not invasive. My second visit to this motel and quite satisfied with all amenities.

“They've made a lot of improvements!”

My husband and I decided to jump in the car and head out of Portland for an overnight get away. We didnt' want to spend a bunch of money, so we chose this hotel, since (with the online coupon) we could a one-bedroom suite, with kitchen, for the same price or cheaper than other rooms in town. Dining in Astoria can be a little spendy, so we brought our own food in the cooler to cook in the little kitchen.

Honestly, after seeing the online pictures, my expectations were not that high, but we were pleasantly surprised! They have done a lot of updating on the motel itself and the rooms. The small and basically stocked kitchen had new cabinets and a nice countertop. Full size fridge, stove, oven and microwave made cooking up breakfast and dinner easy. The separate vanity outside the bath was also updated. The rest of the furnishings were dated, but serviceable. The view from our room was great--right out over the Columbia River.

The motel has replaced all the windows that face the busy highway, so once you close your window, it's very quiet. Obviously, with the windows open, it can be noisy.

We were allowed to check in early; they had a basic snack breakfast with coffee and pastries. Not a bad deal, and I would definitely come back when I'm having a budget weekend.

Room Tip: Room 231 is a one bedroom corner suite

“If you like rooms that smell like ashtrays, you'll love it.”

Upon check-in, we were greeted my a nice gentleman who provided fast service. When I asked where we could park, he moved his truck so we could park there, but another guest grabbed it. He kindly agreed I could stay parked in between a couple of other parked cars since we had a small car.

As for the room, to say the room reeked of smoke would be an understatement. I asked the kindly gentleman if he had other rooms and he said they were full. He apologized for the smoke stating how hard it is to control people's smoking even in a non-smoking room (even though there's a sign on the door stating not to smoke within 10 or 20 feet of the room). I had to use almost a whole can of Lysol I had to try to overcome the foul stench in the room so we could attempt to get to sleep. It would've been nice if the maid would've taken care of that. But, she's probably the one who smoked in the room while "cleaning" it. Extra nice touch with the cigarette butts lining the stairway.

The freezer was dirty and the microwave buzzer sounded every few minutes. In the morning, I thought I could at least have a complimentary cup of coffee (since there was none in the lobby left). Alas, this was not to be. The in-room coffeemaker was unusable because it a) had stagnant water from a previous guest and b) had someone's hair in it. Lovely.

Three positive notes: ice machine is handy, free continental breakfast, soda machine is ultra-cheap at 75 cents per can.

Overall: although I received 10 percent off with a coupon, I would likely not stay here again. On our two week trip involving several different hotels and motels, this was by far the worst night of the trip. However, if you like dirty, stinky, and overpriced motels, you'll love this place. This motel should be donated to the nearest rescue machine for housing for the homeless.

The bed was ROCK hard. There is no A/C and it is too loud to leave the window open. The bathroom was not clean (found hairs in the tub).

Should have stayed at the Super 8!!
