My fiance has wanted to go to Gettysburg for a while but I didn't really have any interest. I'm not a big history/war person. Then he suggested that we stay at a haunted hotel and take ghost tours, and I was IN!
After some research he discovered Farnsworth House Inn. We found that it was voted one of the most haunted B&Bs in America and were hooked. After even more research we found that the Sarah Black room was reported to be the most active, so even though it was one of the more expensive rooms, we booked it.
Booking was really easy. I loved that we were able to see what rooms were available on what dates online. We ended up planning our vacation around when the Sarah Black room was available. I booked for 3 nights (most would think we are crazy for that!) online and received a response within a day via email confirming our reservation ($100 deposit via CC was required).
When we arrived (you need to get there before 5 pm) and like some other reviewers had a difficult time looking for where to check in (it's actually in the back of the house next door. They have a book/gift shop there and that's where you check in. You have to go around the side of that house to get to the door). We were a little surprised and unprepared to have to pay upfront for our stay though. So, everyone else....be prepared for that. We were taken over to the house and through the side door. You walk down a hallway that turns and makes its way over to the addition (there is the original part of the house and the addition...both are pre-civil war). Our room was at the front of the house. When you look at pictures of the front, all 3 windows upstairs are the Sarah Black room. We were pleasantly surprised! I expected a small room and a teeny bathroom. The bathroom was huge! And the bedroom was a decent size. I was surprised/slightly relieved to see that the haunted wedding dress was removed from the room.
A few reviewers have stated that the room was not clean/dusty. It was pretty clean for my standards. I wasn't expecting a 5 star hotel! I was expecting an old house, with old furnishings, old plumbing and old wiring. If you are expecting the Taj Mahal...go elsewhere. You are going to the Farnsworth for the experience OF Farnsworth. Not to stay in a fancy hotel with crazy amenities. My only complaint is that they say you can't eat or even drink in the room. I had to sneak something to drink because I'd die without hydrating myself at night!
There is no phone in the room, so don’t expect it. There is also a VERY small tv (probably a 13 inch) but it was flat screen and served it’s purpose.
Others have complained about the lack of electrical outlets. I didn’t have a problem. There were enough for our needs.
The first day our room was colder than it was outside (mid-November, but it was pretty mild outside) and even though I kept trying to turn the heat on, it kept turning itself off (ghost, I’m not sure because once we told the staff about it, it worked fine).
Another thing people should know is that the shower alternates from hot to cold in about 45 second intervals, so don’t expect to have a great shower. The toilet also makes a lot of noise (some noises are kind of a knocking sound, so don’t think it’s a ghost walking around because it’s not. It’s just the toilet/plumbing).
As for activity, we didn’t have anything crazy. We’ve been told that many people don’t even make it through the night in our room, but we made it through 3. Here’s a list of the activity we experienced:
- first night my fiancé was going to lock the door for the night and said “I’m locking the door” out of nowhere. Confused I said “What?”, he repeated “I’m locking the door.” I said “Okaaaay.” He looks at me confused and says, “You asked me what I was doing, and I’m telling you that I’m locking the door.” I hadn’t asked him ANYTHING!
- Later that night I woke up and felt terrified. I lay awake in bed for about 30 minutes and then there was a very loud bang on the floor right next to the bed on my side, then silence. Nothing else. There’s no explanation.
- 2nd evening we were watching television and my fiancé had fallen asleep. There was a tour going on upstairs (ghost tour). All of a sudden there was this triangular shadow doing circles on our ceiling. I woke my fiancé and we video taped it. We looked for an explanation but there was none.
- There was a constant cold spot in front of our room in the hallway. Apparently Mary (the midwife/nurse) hung herself off the stairs right in front of our room.
- When we first walked into our room upon arrival we both felt extremely dizzy. I was able to shake it off but my fiancé was unable to and had to lay down for a while. We thought maybe because the floors were sagging a bit to the one side. We found out later on the ghost tour (without us mentioning this) that the ghost of Harvey was upset that my fiancé was there and one of the feelings Harvey is known for giving people is dizziness.
- We saw a few shadows here and there, but they didn’t last long enough for us to analyze them.
- During a ghost tour in the attic, while talking to ghosts using dowsing rods, the attic door flew open.
- We purchased dowsing rods in the hotel gift shop and spoke with a few sprits in our room. VERY interesting.
There have been some crazy things that have happened in this room, but there have also been many people who have reported nothing but a quiet night and restful sleep. It’s a gamble and you don’t know what you’ll get. Very interesting and loved every minute of it though! There is also a journal kept in the room where previous guests make entries for others to read. Really cool!
Unrelated to our actual room, on our first night someone was staying in the Eisenhower room and we walked by a few times within about a 2 hour span and their door was wide open and the light on. We couldn't understand why someone would do that. We found out later that the guest in that room had turned off the light and left the door closed and locked and came back to find the door wide open and the lights on.
I will review the Ghost Tour, Ghost Hunt and Farnsworth dining room in separate reviews.
