“Wish I'd read the reviews, this place is a joke”

I was in Philadelphia with some friends for a conference at the Marriott on Market Street but as it was full and expensive, The Columns seemed like a charming alternative from the online description
(can't find that review now funnily enough though...). Initially we were delighted, the rooms were well designed with interesting wallpaper, fittings and books, each with a different theme, very retro
and vintage. The B&B is one of many large townhouses on a leafy avenue
called Clinton Street and all in all we thought we'd made a grand choice- unfortunately that was before we'd stayed there or met Kathy.

The first night I arrived back fairly late from the conference to check in, only to be informed by one of my friends who'd already checked in that the landlady had been badmouthing us as my name sounded "foreign", and as I didn't tell her my time of arrival (I'd arrived a day later than planned, but had let her know this through a friend) - very unprofessional. She then proceeded to extract full payment from us there and then, as we were getting ready for bed and much the worse for wear, which I found very insulting and so refused to give her my credit card details and requested she wait til the next
day when I'd pay her in cash.

We had an 8am start at the conference, so left without getting breakfast (best choice from what I hear). Before I left I asked her about the laundry service, and she told me that there was a laundrette
a few blocks away! charming. If I'd checked the online description of the B&B before I'd asked, I would have called her on that, as it clearly specifies that the service is available.

On our return that evening she followed me into my room casually moaning on about not being able to clean it earlier as she was having the computer fixed- the logic of that excuse still escapes me- but I said nothing at the time thinking it would be done the next morning. Surprise surprise it wasn't- and we quickly appreciated the disadvantages of Kathy having no full-time staff employed at The Columns. Throughout the duration of our stay, the room was hoovered only once, the bathroom was never cleaned, and towels and bed-linen never changed. In addition to this the bathroom sink was constantly blocked and the heating was turned right down. I could have coped if this was all, but she has a cat, a thoroughly detestable grey animal that is allowed to wonder about the B&B at will, and as there are no locks on the bedroom doors (!) it targetted my bed a lot- in fact the smell of cat urine on my pillow and sheets was so bad by the third night I borrowed a pillow from one of my friends and when Kathy told me off for doing so I pointed out why. She smelt the bed and immediately changed the pillow and sheet ("why didn't you tell me before?" she retorted), and then proceeded to blame the smell on the
"Ralph Lauren dyes" she'd used to treat the sheets and said she didn't
smell it herself but... Absolute tosh, she knew what her little bundle
of horror had done and was worried that I might make an issue out of it. So yes, I suppose I got some of my linen changed once at least, but neither of my friends did.

I'm sure Kathy has redeeming qualities- she's clearly a woman of experience and from the early reviews I've read some may feel that she
provides entertaining and interesting conversation. Unfortunately I'm not one of them; she basically complains a lot. She complained that I had irrevocably damaged an antique dresser in our room by resting some
a small tub of salon product containing sugar solution on it (I cleaned it up, no damage was done). She complained that her cat had gone missing (it returned). She complained that my friend had put a bag on an antique sofa - an antique sofa which her incontinent cat had
just jumped off (It begs the question- why have "antique" furniture in
a B&B if you're worried about it geting damaged?).

The Columns and Kathy are like a bad parody of the B&B business- like Fawlty Towers but without the laughter track and with a landlady who is clearly nuts. Its a shame to have to give such a bad review, I coped better than expected as I had mates with me, we're doctoral students and fairly easy-going- but I really want to stress how highly
UN-recommended this B&B is as an option in Philadelphia.

“Absolutely Awful”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2007

I stayed one night at Columns and it was quite possibly the worst B&B experience I've ever had. While this large house is in a lovely location, the breakfast was unpalatable, the house was cluttered and dirty, and the innkeeper's behavior was appallingly.

Another B&B, Antique Row, was full and they recommended Columns. When we called to make a reservation, Kathy, the owner was brusque and spent most of the conversation telling us about what a bad day she was having. Upon our arrival, she continued to complain about how much she disliked her guests and how tired she was. She was very irritated at us for being a hour later than expected, even though we called en route to let her know. When we came home after dinner Kathy told us not to come down for breakfast until 10.

The lobby had junk everywhere--a broken computer and monitor blocking the couch and a sad-looking broken doll in the only chair.

Our room was very small and overstuffed with broken lamps, boxy inexpensive furniture lining every wall and ugly knickknacks everywhere. There was so much stuff in the room--we had trouble walking around the bed without tripping over something. Our closets were also full of random junk (our neighbor had a giant chandelier in their closet so clearly the owner likes to use the rooms to store her projects).

Other problems: since we shared a bathroom with 8 other people, we had to wait quite awhile to use it before bed and there was no overflow bathroom on another floor. Also, none of the bedroom doors had locks.

Meanwhile, back in our room, a thick layer of dust covered every surface, including the pillows. We couldn't turn the A/C off and the room was freezing. The bed was comfortable, but we were bitten by some sort of insect while we slept.

When we came down to breakfast the owner said, "well you'll have to wait." The table only sat 5 people (the hotel has 4 floors of rooms). The breakfast was simply awful. Our options: stale cereal, stale toaster waffles, molding bananas, room temperature Light yogurt, styrofoam-textured Safeway muffins, and toast accompanied by jam with mold floating in it. As a bonus, the cream for the coffee was curdled. Every person at the table asked for new cream but the owner insisted that it was fine, despite the chunks floating in each guests' mug.

During breakfast, the owner gave unsolicited advice and shared her offensive opinions--including complaining, again, about other guests. If we thought she was rude to us we were shocked at the way she treated others.

We checked out immediately afterwards. She made us wait several minutes while she combed through our room. Then she came down the stairs and started screaming at us. Literally, screaming. First, she accused us of stealing her towels. Then, she was upset that we used the comforter in the closet. Then, she said we misrepresented how many people were in the room and refused to return my credit card. Finally, she started yelling "Get out of my house! Get out!" It was completely bizarre. She followed us out into the street, screaming, as we walked rapidly away.

I have never been treated so poorly. It's pretty clear that the owner is in the wrong line of work. Philly has many lovely B&Bs, and next time we'll be staying at one of them.

“wonderful place with a fantastic owner”

My wife had to undergo knee surgery at the Philadelphia Hospital the week of Thanksgiving. I stayed at the Columns for a few days while she underwent her surgery. I was alone and terrified because of her upcoming surgery. The owner of the B&B Kathy treated me as if I was one of the family. She even went so far as to bring me a Turkey Dinner ( to the hospital )on Thanksgiving day because she wanted to make sure I had something to eat because all the restaurants were closed for the holiday. I can only say one thing about the B&B its a wonderful place to stay. Its very comfortable with nice large rooms and the owner is a wonderful person. My wife and I will only stay there now when we go back to Philadelphia. I cant say enough about the way I was treated. Kathy truly is a nice lady and she goes above and beyond.

“Innkeeper is Horrendous, Heat was broken”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 February 2007

I stayed at the Columns on Clinton, and while the property was almost livable, the experience was made practically unbearable by the vile manners of the owner, Kathy.

When we arrived (we were later than she had been told by the booking company we would arrive, but this is travel--one does not always arrive at an exact time) she actually YELLED at us! She harangued us for 15 minutes, accusing us of having "ruined her entire day."

After this horrific outburst, she took us up to the room on the third floor, which was very small and had a shared bathroom in the hall with two other rooms. When we got to the room, she says in this offhand manner "oh, by the way, the heat isn't working." Are you kidding me? It was absolutely freezing--temperature in the low 20's and snowing. She says, oh here's an electric heater, as if she was doing us a huge favor.

We plug in the heater, she goes downstairs, and then--the fuse blows, knocking out both the lights and the heater. We call her back up, and she basically blamed us for overloading the circuit. She unplugs one heater, flips the breaker, and we are now down to one heater about the size of a toaster. She goes downstairs again, and within a couple of minutes, the fuse blows again, plunging us into the cold and darkness. We call her back, and she accuses us of turning on more aplliances and blames the outage on us! We tell her we touched nothing, and she just glares at us and then accuses us of entering another room, and turning on THEIR heater! Needless to say, this was completely ridiculous.

Finally, the pathetic heater holds up the rest of the night and we huddle for warmth.

The next morning, we go down for breakfast, which was neither hot nor homemade, and she starts haranguing us and the other guests, who were equally taken aback, about her belief that she is "the only white woman fit to run for president in this country." I am completely serious--she actually said that. Then she announces that she would like to "go to Texas and personally throw all of the immigrants out of this country." At this point, I just got up and left.

We did not eat anymore breakfasts and this so-called "B&B" and we did everything to avoid this awful woman, who snapped at us every time she saw us. When we finally left the godforsaken place after three days, she actually accused us of stealing her books! I am not kidding.

This was without a doubt the worst hotel experience I have ever had, and it was totally overpriced! I can't imagine a person more ill-suited to the B&B business than the owner of ths Columns on Clinton.

I would not recommend anyone stay here under any circumstances.

“Beautiful house and location, but a very intrusive inn-keeper”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2006

My family stayed at this bed and breakfast over Memorial Day weekend. I have very mixed feelings about this b&b.

Pros: It is on a beautiful tree-lined street in historic Philadelphia which is walking distance to all of the sites, and a cool destination in itself. The house is a gorgeous, four-story brick house that was built in the 1800s and has a lot of character and history. The rooms were clean, too.

Cons: The major drawback to this b&b is the innkeeper. She is INCREDIBLY invasive and has a very abrasive personality. My family stayed there while attending a cousin's graduation, and Memorial Day weekend was the first time we had seen each other since Christmas. During breakfast, she insisted on sitting down and monopolizing our conversation, to the point of interrupting us.

When we were coming and going, she would keep tabs on how long we had been gone, and comment upon it (ie, "Oh, you are back quickly. You did not have a party after the graduation?").

On Memorial day, my mother and I got up to get some coffee around 8:10 am (she had stated that breakfast was available any time after 8 am). The inn-keeper said "Oh, I thought you were not eating breakfast until later!" as if we had put her out.

Then, when we wanted to drink coffee on the bench in front of the inn, because it is a very pleasant street, she placed several barriers in our way. First, she claimed that we could not take the coffe cups outside. After we said that we would use our own travel mug, she went into a very long diatribe about how the neighbors complain about the noise from people talking on the bench, as if we were not allowed to sit and talk on the bench in the morning at 8:15 am or so!

Overall, this is a pretty b&b, if you can stand a very intrusive inn-keeper. Do not go to this inn if you want any sort of time alone with your companion at breakfast, or if you want some privacy.
