“Best of Both Worlds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I enjoy visiting different B and B's up and down the East Coast, and I recently discovered my new favorite. Located centrally in the heart of the most significant historic district in the entire US, the Morris House Hotel truly is a hidden gem. The history of the building was delightful to learn as the extremely friendly and helpful staff explained it to me. They also informed me about the restaurant they have on site and I was eager to try it out. Situated on the other side of the property's elegant courtyard was the M Restaurant, which far exceeded my expectations. In the morning, the continental breakfast served by the hotel was spectacular. Breakfast by the fireplace in the Library area was a delightful way to start my day! One of my favorite aspects of the hotel is the fact that they not only have the Victorian themed rooms, but the concierge let me take a peek into one of the Modern themed luxury suites which I definitely need to stay in the next time I am in town. The front desk people were extremely helpful with providing suggestions of activities around the city. I absolutely will come back and stay here again!

“Step back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We have started to take mini getaways. So far most have been refreshing. This destination was to celebrate my husband's birthday and Valentines day. We set up our dinner at M restaurant and then the hotel. The best part of this trip was that we scheduled the overnight stay at the hotel. The restaurant did not reach our expectations...so we could salvage the mini holiday with the hotel. The two different front desk manager were the sweetest and most helpful woman. They made you feel like you were guest in their home. Our room was like stepping back in time. This was a historic home so the bathroom was the best that could be provided within the small quarters. Suprising the street noise was nonexistent. The continental breakfast was set up like self serve fine dining. China, silverware and linen napkins made this more elegant . We would stay here again. We would find another restaurant to eat at instead of M restaurant.

“A gem in Society Hill”

We just spent Valentine's weekend in the Morris Hotel and it was special. The luxury room was perfect for us- flat screen TV, WIFI, windows overlooking the gardens, free chocolates and bottles of spring water, robes in the bathoom, very nice breakfast and, above all, an excellent staff. The sitting rooms with the blazing fireplaces invite warmth and relaxation. A special dinner menu was included that topped off the weekend. Everything is walkable to all the historic sites and center city shopping.

“great location/bad service”

This is a cute bed and breakfast in the heart of Philly.

First with the negatives:

-I flew in a red-eye from the west coast, I called ahead and asked if I was able to check in early. They said "not that early" and that I would have to pay for an extra night... so I did. $350 for a night and half" and in order to check out late (after 11, they charge $50). So forget it!
-water pressure, I was on the third floor, was really bad. cold, hot, cold, hot, slow stream... not very comforting when it is 30 degrees out and all I want is a hot shower
-no elevator to help with belongings
-loud pipes, I could hear the neighbor taking a shower
-didn't get offered to help bring my belongings in or out of the hotel
-no parking
-Old cable-television kept cutting in and out

Pluses:

-great location
-1 block away from Jefferson Hospital
-4 blocks from constitutional hall/liberty bell
-1 block away from Walnut/Chestnut area
-warm duvet on the bed
-location location location

-might consider coming back. when I checked on Priceline for an extra night since I was coming in early, it was only $100. They said if I were to book that room, then I would be able to check in at 7am then check back out at 11am and wait until 3pm to check into a different room! Maybe I shouldn't book so far in advance next time. I feel that for a bed and breakfast, they service could be much better.

“Tradeoffs”

OK, this is not a 5 star hotel nor does it pretend to be. It IS a charming inn dripping with history. We had a second floor suite. Comfortable, with all the expected amenities and a few of the problems one might associate with such a creaky property. As noted by others, the bathroom was "functional" at best. Water pressure was wanting, as was space for toiletries. But somehow I'd already compensated for that at the time I made the reservation. Parking was convenient and reasonably priced. Breakfast as well as wireless internet was included. Coffee, tea and cookies available gratis all day long. We'll be back. We thought this a bargain and overall such a pleasant experience that the "shortcomings" really added to the charm.

Room Tip: Ask the desk for the booklet that gives the history of the house. It will set you back a buck, but i...
