“Needs refreshing and updating...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2010

As many reviews state, if you have a friend or relative in University of Pennsylvania Hospital and want to be right there for them, this is the place to stay. The hotel connects directly to the Silverstein Pavillion via a skywalk.

The rooms are spacious. The rates in my opinion are very fair in today's hotel market. As another reviewer stated, I found the rooms to be clean. However, the bathrooms are pretty beat up and in need of replacement. Being involved in construction, I can state that the hardware used when these rooms were built wasn't all that good to start with and it hasn't withstood the test of time all that well.

There are cracks in the vanity sinks. The cracks stain and can't be cleaned. This makes them appear to be dirty. The tubs have been refinished and the new finish is peeling off. My shower faucet only provided extremely hot water that could not be tempered at all. I stood as far back as I could to avoid being burned.

In short, Penn Tower management - If you are reading this... You shut shut down these rooms one at a time and replace the bathrooms. Everything else about this hotel is at the very least adequate and can't be beat in regards to location and convenience.

“Clean but old”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2010

We found our room to be clean and in order. While the sheets were clean and the mattresses comfortable, the blankets were old & scratchy. There were no amenities to speak of, we chose the hotel for it's proximity to University of Pennsylvania. The heat & a/c worked but they were somewhat difficult to fully control. This hotel was the best price in our desired location. While it was not a great hotel, it served its purpose.

“wonderful for what was needed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2010

My husband needed heart surgery at Presbyterian and this hotel was the most reasonable hotel nearby even with the cost of a taxi to Presbyterian, it was still more reasonable than other hotels, it was clean, the room temperature could be adjusted easily, the staff was warm & helpful, and the location was excellent. There is a restaurant in the building which was fine, a McDonald's across the street open 24 hours a day.

“If you have a relative at HUP and you want to be able to get there fast, this is your place....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2010

...if you are looking for a vacation retreat, keep looking... Penn Tower is only a short indoor walk away from the hospital and having spent 8 long, hot summer days with a relatvie at HUP,it was a good choice for me, rather than hoofing it blocks and blocks to another hotel in the scorching heat. The room was big, the air conditioner was strong and despite what I read in other reviews, all was clean and I didn't see any bugs... My one complaint would be the temperature of the water in the bathroom..."lukewarm" doesn't cut it after you spend 8 or 9 hours in a hospital room... If you are in town looking to experience the city, go elsewhere...if you are looking to survive a family member's hospital stay at the closest proximity possible, this is the place. (You will not starve despite the lack of dining options...there is a good sandwich shop on the ground floor and the hospital food is better than you'd think...)

“Horrible filthy place at rip-off rates”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2010

This is a dreadful filthy place with no amenities one would expect even in the cheapest motel. I found a cockroach in the bathroom. Bedding is incredibly used and the blankets are disgusting. Paint is peeling everywhere and no one covered up fixtures that were ripped out from the walls. Staff is friendly but incompetent. The price is outrageous for such a dump based on the premise of convenience (yes, it is connected to the hospital). To the management - this is called taking advantage of people who need of a place to stay while their loved one is in the hospital. In the loan industry the term for such practice is sharking and it's illegal. Shame on you!
