We stayed one night with the kids during a quick sightseeing trip to Philly. It was our first Aloft experience, which I liken to calling W Lite. It may not have the street cred, but it's still a modern, borderline hip place to stay, without the attitude and high prices. By and large, we were pleased with the stay.
Our $121 room had two queen beds. Initially, we were put in a room where the HVAC unit was rumbling so loudly to drown out any noise from the nearby runway. They quickly switched us to an identical room, where the climate control was as it should be. The rooms are contemporary, without being overtly minimalist. The bed stand had a faux retro alarm clock. In both rooms we saw, the clocks were way off. Don't know if they do that on purpose, but it's a bit annoying.
The sliding bathroom door has no lock. There are no baths in the standard rooms, only showers, in case that's an issue. But the bed was comfy and initial concerns about being too close to the airport were quickly allayed. Most of the planes on the runway were coming in rather than the other way around.
The staff we encountered were uniformly friendly and helpful. We had a credit for breakfast, where there is a small selection of mostly cold items. They have a cook making breakfast sandwiches that are actually quite tasty and not a bad deal at $3.50. We chose a vegetable omelette sandwich with sun-dried tomatoes and one with bacon and eggs. The former was not as good as it had been sitting out for a bit. Without asking she brought us a fresh-made one. A big improvement and a nice touch. Ask when the sandwich was made before you take it. If it was more than five minutes, ask to have another one made.
My biggest beef is that some costs are hard to ascertain. For example, goodl luck trying to find on the hotel website whether there's a charge for parking. In fact, you get the impression that it's gratis because the desk clerk validated your ticket at the desk. But only upon getting the bill do you see that you're charged $7, like the sister Starwood properties next door. And with the breakfast package, there's no hint that the credit is for $10, which may not go far with a family of four, though we somehow stretched it when they didn't charge us for coffee (they didn't put up a sign that it was $2.50 a cup until later).
Still, I'd go back. Definitelya nice change of pace from typical airport hotels. Speaking of which, these can be great deals if you're doing the sights in Philly on the weekend and have a car. The airport is just seven miles from downtown. The room rates are markedly lower than in the city, where parking can run north of $40 a day. Guess I shouldn't be moaning about the $7, but you can find other properties where that same spot is free. Only downside of location: a shortage of places to eat. But take care of that back in the city. That's one of the reasons you came in the first place.
