“An Experience To Remember”

We arrived on February 20, 2004 and were immediately mesmerized by the location of this lodge. You're surrounded by wilderness no matter where you look. Snow, snow everywhere and more coming down. The cabin we stayed was more or less filled with amenities such as refrigerator and gas stove. It had a bathroom with a bathtub. The kitchen was awesome.
The food which is prepared by Jan was delicious so was she. There is a sauna that we used almost every night. There were miles of beautiful ski country. The people working there were more than helpful and more than friendly, especially Shawn. We stayed 3 wonderful days and night in this lodge. I would definitely go back.

We chose the Rock Creek Lodge for a short (overnight stay) to check my sister's comfort level at higher altitudes, prior to a trip to Cuzco, Peru... This lodge appears to be the highest, offering accomodation, in the Mammoth area.

We arrived (just) in time for dinner at 6pm (for which we had reserved... dont be late, you will not be served. The dinner was quite decent and the service was good... the home baked bread was great and the desserts (looked) scrumptious.

When we booked, we forgot (nor did we think) to ask about bathroom facilities. It turned out that our cabin (#7) had neither toilet nor shower. (knowing it had a kitchenette, we had taken the shower for granted).... If we had planned on camping and the nightime temperature had not been forecast at 30F (early October), the midnight stroll of about 50 yds to the communal toilets (if required, and after 50 it often is) would have been tolerable.

After being advised of the toilet situation, we "upgraded" to the A-Frame which was the only "modern" accomodation available. The words "modern" and "upgrade" are not to be taken literally.... The A-Frame was ramshackle by anyone's standards; there was no carpeting or floor covering, just construction grade plywood. The window coverings were early poverty, the "furniture" (a sort of futon couch and a chair)would have been rejected by Goodwill! The kitchen area was less than basic with very limited dishes etc...

On the positive side, there was adequate firewood for the pot bellied stove and one-strike matches. The beds were clean and made up and there were some little towels (but no soap - we used the dishwashing liquid and smelled quite nice afterward).... There is a warning posted advising "guests" to wash their dishes or be subject to a $15 fine (likewise if your dog gets on the furniture, although I can't imagine what harm it could do!).

We are not spoiled travelers... we have slept on many floors and camped with the minimum of convenience... we were just greatly disappointed with what we got for $160 ($145 plus tax) for three of us... perhaps under warm summer conditions, with max occupancy, the price could be justified.... at half price the accomodations
could be acceptable but, I feel, the owners/managers could try to give a little better value... My stay the next night at the Best Motel in Mojave ($29) was luxurious by comparison.

Signed... Disappointed Brian
