“Never Again!”

My 9 month old son and I accompianed my husband on his business trip in January of 2012. We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. The hotel is large but very outdated. The parking garage was pretty scary. There are no hotel employees supervising this area and there are signs stating that you are parking at your own risk. There was a fridge but no microwave. The room was like a cave, even with it's large space (we had a suite) it felt dark and dingy. We requested a crib for our son. When we called down to have it delivered, no one answered the phone at the desk. My husband had to go down and ask for it. Once it finally arrived, it was a pack-in-play style which was great but it came with no sheet. My husband called down to the desk once again, no answer. He had to go back down to ask for a sheet, they gave him 3 pillow cases and then he had to ask again for a flat or fitted sheet for the pack-in-play. I had moved a chair in the living room to fit the crib near a wall and all I saw was crumbled food on the floor beneath where the chair was. Disgusting! I did not let my son crawl on the floor once the entire time we stayed there. I slept near the window which filtered in cold air all night long. I was freezing and made my husband sleep next to the window the next night. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom wasn't too bad but it did need some attention to the cracked tiles and torn wall paper.

I decided to take my son swimming. Pool was a good size. Water was tepid. The jacuzzi was empty of water and looked like it was going to be repaired. There was a used band aid next to the pool and some floaties that needed to be cleaned out of the water. I don't think anyone is reponsible for cleaning up this area. It definetly could have used some attention.

Although it was very cold out I decided to take my son for a walk in his stroller to get out of the hotel. In search of an open store, I found a CVS drugstore nearby. There were a couple bars and restaurants in walking distance but that was it. There was no shopping and I soon realized on my walk that I probably should head back to the hotel. I grew up in an inner city and I'm used to being aware of my surroundings. I soon realized on my walk that I should not be walking around alone with my purse and pushing my baby in his stroller. I saw some very shady charcters on my walk.

Housekeeping came to our door and when I answered, I was surprised to see 2 men. I was hesitant on letting 2 men into my room especially since my husband was out working. I let them in anyways to change our trash and replace towels. I had no problem with them besides understanding their broken english.

I would not recommend this hotel and especially not for anyone who has children. I cannot stand an unclean hotel room!

Room Tip: Stay at another hotel.

“Not a terrible hotel, but not a good one -- you can do better”

We stayed for one night at this hotel, and were way underwhelmed.

It is clearly in decline bordering on decay. The hotel used to be a Doubletree and lost that affiliation -- it says all you need to know that they just covered up the "Doubletree" logo outside with white boards. On our floor, there had been a electrical fire near the ice-maker -- now there is a hole with smoke marks. Reassuring. The staff was lackluster and bored looking.

Look elsewhere. This is not a good hotel.

“Dirty, dingy, dull”

As a native of Dayton, Ohio, I am familiar with the city's long struggle to survive economic decline. The Dayton Grand Hotel is situated in the heart of a downtown district that is a shell of its former self, and the hotel mirrors that sad state of urban affairs.

I stayed at the hotel one night only -- it was one night too many -- on Nov. 19 while my daughter and I were in town for the A-10 volleyball tournament at UD. I booked a "one-bedroom king suite" through travelocity.com.

I read negative views of the parking garage on this site, all of which were accurate. I could barely snake up and down the narrow twists and turns with my Mazda CX-9, and probably couldn't have fit into the skinny spaces. I didn't test my parking prowess, however, due to the filthy, unsafe feel of the garage.

Check-in was painless, but the ride up ten floors to our room on the rickety, cramped elevator tested our courage. Upon entering our room, we found the decor only loosely connected from a style perspective. The room's furnishings showed lots of wear, including tears in the fabric of the sofa cushions. The room included a king bed and a roll-out sofa bed, in a single room, which doesn't exactly match my expectations from the described "one-bedroom king suite."

When we rolled out the sofa bed, it was not made up and there were stains on the thin mattress. A visit to the "rooftop pool," which is located on the seventh floor in a 12-story building, intensified our disgust -- someone had spat in the middle of the pool leaving a disgusting blob floating on top of the water. No hotel staff were anywhere to be seen. Needless to say, we kept our swimming attire in the suitcase!

The night was noisy, with other guests slamming doors and roaming the hallways until the wee hours. I guess low-quality hotels attract a less than civil clientele. The temperature of the room was also impossible to regulate with an old AC/fan unit that only put out warm air.

I have family in the Dayton area, so I doubt I'll have much occasion to stay in a hotel in the city again soon. If I do, however, I will avoid the Dayton Grand Hotel. Its name offers a sadly ironic perspective on the state of a once-great city.

Room Tip: Don't waste your money on a suite. They don't really exist at this hotel.

“Nice Hotel. Great Nights' Sleep”

Stayed 11-11-11 through 11-13-11. This was overall a nice hotel. It had a few downsides but there weren't terrible. The room was huge (we had a suite with a pull out couch). The indoor pool and fitness area were great (the hot-tub was under repair but we didn't plan to use it anyhow). The parking was free but the parking garage was a little shabby and poorly lit (plus no elevator which made transporting luggage in to room a bit of a pain). The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The room was quiet and we didn't have any noise from other guests to bother us. The carpets could use cleaning in the room we stayed in, but we just left our socks on. I would recommend for business or personal travel. We traveled with little kids and it was a good hotel for families.

“Definite Pluses and Minuses”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

This hotel is located right off the freeway in downtown Dayton so it is easy to get to for travelers. Downtown Dayton however, is pretty void of life and very deserted. If you are looking to go out for drinks try the Oregon district which is only a short drive/cab ride away.
The internet pricing on their website seemed to be the best deal at about $80/night. The rooms were spacious and clean although the bathroom is pretty small.
There is a free parking garage but it is abysmal. It is dark and dirty and there is no elevator. I really hope they do something to improve their parking situation; it is bad.
We were traveling about 8 hours by car to Dayton for a wedding so I called a couple days before our arrival to inquire about early check in. I said we may arrive about an hour before their 3pm check in time depending on traffic conditions. I was told that we could check in early if the room was ready but there would a $35 charge - nearly half the price of the room!!! The person I spoke to said they may not charge us if it was close to 3pm but he couldnt guarantee it. We did end up arriving about an hour early and did not get charged the $35 but it was frustrating that on the 2-3 occasions I had to talk with hotel personnel about various items, I seemed to get people who were not that interested in giving solid information or being friendly.
Upon entering the room, we did not find any information about the hotel or surrounding area provided. They did not provide any information on the amenities in the hotel, location/hours of the pool, restaurant information, etc. I called the front desk to find out if our room was just missing it but was told they didnt have that information for the rooms and we should just call them each time we had a question. Interestingly we had other friends staying in the hotel the same nights and we were all told different hours for the pool and got a mixed message about if there was a bar. They told us there was an issue with their liquor license and didnt really know when/if they would have a bar.
Also, this hotel is going through a transition with its name change but they have gone about the cosmetic changes in very tacky ways. Examples: the big sign for the hotel on the outside of the building just says "Hotel" and the rest of their previous name is just blocked off - their name isnt displayed outside and they told us the changeover occurred months ago; the phones in the room are the same way - they have taped pieces of paper over the previous hotel name that just reveal the word 'hotel'; and the keys still say 'Doubletree'.
Overall a decent, reasonably priced place to stay in downtown Dayton but there is A LOT of room for improvement in many areas.
