“The hotel is going through some changes”

I recently stayed at this hotel. I reserved a room for 4 nights and checked out after 1 night. I transferred over to the Hilton Garden Inn in Beavercreek (15 minute drive from the Dayton Grand Hotel and worth the slight inconvenience of not staying downtown). The Dayton Grand Hotel is going through transition and I had a terrible experience. From the dark dingy parking structure without an elevator (I had to walk down two ramps late at night), no valet service (this would have been a welcomed sight late at night for a woman traveling on her own), no room service or restaurant (the hotel has a small restaurant that serves breakfast until only 8:30 am with a very limited menu)…I could go on and on. The one positive…the employees working at the front desk were really nice. I hope the hotel gets their act together soon. In the meantime, I would stay clear of the place.

“Could be worse...could be better...so I guess that's average”

My first experience with this hotel was pulling into the parking garage. It is very small and so it's hard to go up the ramps to higher floors. The lines on the parking spots are barely visible so it's hard to tell what's even a spot. I had to park on the 5th floor, which is fine, but there are no elevators so I had to roll my suitcase down the down ramps to get to the lobby. I was seriously worried someone would fly around the corner and hit me...but the turns are so tight I realized that nobody could really "fly" up or down the ramps. The parking is free so that's a plus. Not to state the obvious but when I checked out and went back up to my car I once again I had to roll my luggage around the ramps up to my car.

When you get into the lobby it's nicely decorated. The staff were nice but young and had that look about them that they were bored. They were prompt and friendly though so I guess it doesn't matter if they looked bored.

My room had 2 double beds and was roomy enough. It was clean. The room did have an overpowering perfume smell to it so if you have any senstivities to smell be careful. I didn't notice it as much the next day so I'm guessing it was the cleaning chemicals and they must have recently cleaned my room. I could hear all the street noise early in the evening but it was quiet by bedtime - probably because there's not much going on in Dayton in the evening. The beds were comfy and the pillows were softer but there were plenty of them so it was fine. The bathroom looked remodeled but like they didn't quite finish it. The sink seemed to be marble or granite and the shower wall and floor were tile but then the bathtub was an old greenish color. Not a big deal because everything worked fine and was clean.

Overall it was a nice hotel. Like my title says, there was nothing outstanding or horrible about it.

“Relabeled Double Tree is now Dayton Grand Hotel”

I stayed at the Grand Hotel in downtown Dayton, Ohio while at a business conference from 10/10/2011 to 10/12/2011. The Grand came into existance 4 months ago when Hilton gave up the ghost with the Double Tree and sold the hotel.
Not many things can change in four months so overall the amenities where there. Rooms comfortable, bathrooms not huge, this has been many hotels in its lifetime just under different chains. Looking at the lobby, you could see the old bones, a mezzanine, lower level conference rooms, upper level conference rooms and restaurant attached called the Polo Room.
There were some tired aspects of the hotel, hallway carpet showed its wear but everything was clean and spotless. Overall the hotel was very quiet but considering downtown Dayton has been a ghost town for over a decade, I am from the area, that was no surprise. I did not use the fitness center, sauna and swimming pool but a talked to someone who did and they said it was nice. More spreadout than the normal Hilton and you could exercise without hitting a wall.
I ate breakfast there and for $6, I had eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, rolls, coffee, juice. The hot food was served and others were continental style.
During the conference the hotel served lunch, which was included with conference. The food was very good and not typical conference food. We also had continental breakfast and a reception with snacks provided. The snacks ranged from spring rolls, stuffed tomatoes, meatballs, chicken livers wrapped in bacon etc

The only thing a little scary was the Parking Garage. The parking was free but I am not certain if all who parked there were guests since there was no control who parked there. The parking had been valet but was no longer and area overall tended to be a little dark when you parked at higher levels 7 to 9. The only way up or down was really the driveways going up or down.

Cost, I booked on Hotwire so cost was very competitive.

Overall I would stay there even with a famiy. The value was there, staff excellent and room very comfortable. Only caveat, downtown Dayton has nothing going for it and you will have to get in your car if you want to do anything.

“Too busy to deal with complaints”

We stayed here for our daughter's wedding. It was a horrible experience. The parking was a problem, the parking garage was full and off site parking had to be used, there was not an entrance from the garage to the hotel. There are no elevators in the parking garage. The girls in the wedding party were afraid to be in the garage alone due to poor lighting and lack of security. There were only two elevators in the hotel which would only handle five passengers at a time. Since they overbooked the hotel (three wedding parties) it took quite a while to get on the elevator. Our daughter and her bridesmaids dressed in our room before the wedding. We left the room with personal items laying about. We did not put out the maid service sign when we left at 2:00 PM. The sign on the door read "Maid Service Requested". When we came back the room had been cleaned up, our personal items had been moved, important packaging and receipts had been thrown away. We complained when we returned to the room and again when we checked out. Monty would not speak to us, he had someone else leave a message on voicemail to inform us there would not be any discounts given. We had not asked for a discount, we wanted an apology for the staff invading our privacy and discarding our property. We called back to talk to Monty and we were informed he has more important things to do than to talk to us.

“A nice place to stay but hotel is in transition”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

I stayed at the Grand Hotel in Dayton, Ohio for two nights, on a Sunday and Monday night. The hotel is located downtown and is in an old historic building. I love old hotels. I had a pleasant stay and have to say the staff go out of their way to help you. Joy and Monty at the front desk will ensure you have a pleasant stay. My room was very spacious and clean. Bear in mind that the hotel is downtown and there isn't much in walking distance after 5pm. If you are there on a Sunday just about the entire downtown is closed. I attended a training seminar for two days at the Grand Hotel and I was pleased with the facilities(located on the lower level) and the food/beverage service. This hotel is in a transition. I hope that TripAdvisor readers will book a room at this hotel to help support it. I booked thru Priceline and got my room for two nights at $119.98. An interesting note: When Obama was President-Elect in 2008 he stayed at the Grand Hotel on the 8th floor in room 812...the staff call it the "Presidential Suite". Maybe you can book Obama's room...
