Simply put, you pay for what you get (or you don't pay for what you don't get). Don't kid yourself if you think you're going to get a 3, 4 or 5 star hotel for the rates they offer. Be realistic. If you need a place to crash and your basic concerns are safety, an average level of cleanliness (and even if you have a dog in tow) and location but you're on a tight budget then this place will do. It's in a fantastic location because it's within walking distance to the beach/pier, downtown and a short drive to grocery stores and drugstores.
I brought my own sheets but I am just paranoid that way. The sheets looked perfectly clean to me but I put mine anyway because whatever helps me sleep better!
Saw several families, baby boomer couples and not a shady person in sight. All in all, if I had more money and didn't wait until the last minute I would not have chosen this place but it certainly worked for the situation and my dog. Don't forget AAA if you have it. Got me $10 off.

We recently spent time at the Vagabond and we could not have been happier. I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the other reviews but I am glad we gave this place a try. The room was VERY clean, yes the rugs may be a little worn, but the bedding is top quality and overall the room was immaculate. The real draw here though is the loaction. The Inn is situated just across the street from the ocean which can be reached by using a very convenient boardwalk. We arrived, unpacked and within minutes we were having delicious fish tacos and a cold beer on the Pier which is literally steps away from the hotel. We are already planning a return trip to Ventura and we will most certainly stay at the Vagabond again. You just can't beat the price and they are super "Pet Friendy" - the grounds contain a little dog park with an ample grassy area and benches in the shade to sit while your dog explores. Check-in was friendly. There is a minimal continental breakfast offered but there is also a great little coffee shop attached the the Inn if you want something more substantial.

We stumbled on the Vagabond Inn when we decided to stop off in Ventura, and were pleasantly surprised by the size of the rooms (we had an adjoining room with queen bed for our 5-year-old), the cleanliness and comfort, and the value for money. It's an easy walk to downtown Ventura from the Inn, and there's a nice park for children across the street.

We stayed here for one night and wish it had been longer. The room was very nice and the bed was very comfortable. The pool was a treat. There is a train that runs by the back of the hotel but we didn't hear it at all during the night.
You are very close to the beach, and also to the charming main street.
