“Good value for Boutique Hotel In Midtown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I stayed here for my first ever trip to NYC in December (and again in January). Both times I booked online through the website for less than $210 AFTER taxes (I think the rates are going up as the Construction finishes).

The location was great - very convenient to Central Park, Times Square, etc. The hotel is in the process of being completely overhauled but the construction is almost done. The lobby is modern and clean - and so are the rooms.

The front desk staff was nice and accommodating. I arrived early (10:30) but they took my cell phone number, held my bags, and called me at 1:30 to say my room was ready (check in was at 3:00 pm). The room was small, but clean. The beds seemed brand new (no sign of wear and tear or bedbugs). Depending on what side your room faces it can be noisy as there is construction going on the north side of 54th. It is loud, but this is NYC. I didn't really expect to get a quiet hotel and was very impressed with the Ameritania given how little I paid.

The bathrooms are small, but clean and new. The rain shower is nice, but something to note, the shower is open concept and doesn't have a door. I see in some other reviews that bugged some people.

I snuck up to the roof and it looks like there are in the process building a rooftop deck area to hang out at. I was surprised it was accessible since it looked a little dangerous (mid construction) - so if you have kids or teens, and they are feeling mischievous, be warned.

That evening before going out, grabbed a drink at the bar in the lobby. Drinks were surprisingly cheap (I'm going off Chicago prices) and strong and the bartender was nice.

Checkout the next day was seamless. Another HUGE plus for the Ameritania was that I paid for my room on a debit card and they didn't put a massive hold on my card like some hotels and I wasn't charged until I arrived at the hotel, no reservation fee ahead of time.

I stayed at Ameritania again in January after my great first experience. This time I arrived early again (10:30) and was told my room was ready right away, the desk staff thanked me for coming back to the hotel and upgraded me to a deluxe size room with a King bed. Again the construction across the street was loud during the day, but I was out and about so it wasn't a big deal to me and I sleep with ear plugs.

If the price remains low - I will continue to stay here.

“Got a real kick out of the lobby decor.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I have to admit, I only booked at this hotel because of the online photos I saw of the lobby, and they didn't disappoint. The lobby was fun, eclectic, and completely different be it somewhat small.

There is a small bar, not sure you can even really call it that, as during the day, it's part of the lobby, and the glasses and liquor is hidden behind a curtain, but when it is open, the bartender, was friendly, but not intrusive. and efficient. It was nice to sit down for a moment and enjoy a drink with a friend before we parted and I headed to my room.

Speaking of rooms.... again, the decor was fun and upbeat, but the room in general was small, but realistically, that is to be expected in the city in this price level.

Room was very clean, staff were very friendly to me, which I appreciated, and if I had more time I would have enjoyed hanging out in the lobby area a little more.

If you are looking for a safe, centrally located hotel, with an upbeat vibe within a reasonable amount, the it's a good spot to try.

“Great surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We were given a night at the Ameritania as a gift and added a night to make a weekend of it. We live outside of Manhattan, but often spend a weekend in the city as a quick and easy getaway. This hotel was fabulous!! What a pleasant surprise! Location was perfect, right in midtown near all the theaters. The hotel itself is a gem. We were upgraded to a deluxe king room, a corner with windows on both sides and lots of room to walk around. Although the bathroom is a little small, it is beautifully appointed and the shower is modern and roomy. The decor is modern and sleek, and the staff was friendly and accommodating. A light continental breakfast was included, which was a nice start to the day. The room was a bit noisy during the week, as there is construction going on around the corner, but that's not unusual in NYC.

We would definitely go back and would recommend it without reservation (no pun intended!).

Room Tip: Corner room was very light and spacious.

“Thoroughly charming hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I just spend two nights at the Ameritania after finding a deal through Groupon. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and both the lobby and our room were nicely updated with very modern finishes. The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in. And my more worldy traveling companion kept marveling over the relative spaciousness of the room. We did have a hiccup along the way when our floor lost power for a few hours, but the situation was addressed. My only issue was how dim the room was, but other than that I loved it. I would absolutely recommend the hotel, especially if you can find a deal on it like we did.

“A Reasonable Midtown Option”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Ameritania Hotel for one day during the 2011 Christmas holiday. We got a good rate at the hotel, and while we did have some criticisms, I would say that the value was overall pretty good for that very busy week in very busy NYC midtown. A few notes I would share:

• The elevators were somewhat iffy. Stalling and stopping in a way that made us uneasy and opt for the stairs. I think they were soon to be refurbished – and we would suggest this would very much be a priority.

• The lobby was quite nice, and the bar was small and cozy – it was a good place to get a drink before heading out for the evening.

• Our shower was actually pretty cool – no door - just a large space so water fell on half the room. It had a nice contemporary feel to it. Similarly while the bones of the hotel were quite old, the furnishings, decor and electronics are all brand new.

• The construction noise across the street was really pretty bad – as noted by other posters. We were awakened quite early by the work itself and the radios of the construction crews.

• The last name on our reservation had been spelled incorrectly by the hotel booking agent. While it got sorted out – the gentlemen behind the desk was very quick to tell us that WE had made the mistake and did not have a reservation. It was not the warmest of welcomes.
