I stayed here for my first ever trip to NYC in December (and again in January). Both times I booked online through the website for less than $210 AFTER taxes (I think the rates are going up as the Construction finishes).
The location was great - very convenient to Central Park, Times Square, etc. The hotel is in the process of being completely overhauled but the construction is almost done. The lobby is modern and clean - and so are the rooms.
The front desk staff was nice and accommodating. I arrived early (10:30) but they took my cell phone number, held my bags, and called me at 1:30 to say my room was ready (check in was at 3:00 pm). The room was small, but clean. The beds seemed brand new (no sign of wear and tear or bedbugs). Depending on what side your room faces it can be noisy as there is construction going on the north side of 54th. It is loud, but this is NYC. I didn't really expect to get a quiet hotel and was very impressed with the Ameritania given how little I paid.
The bathrooms are small, but clean and new. The rain shower is nice, but something to note, the shower is open concept and doesn't have a door. I see in some other reviews that bugged some people.
I snuck up to the roof and it looks like there are in the process building a rooftop deck area to hang out at. I was surprised it was accessible since it looked a little dangerous (mid construction) - so if you have kids or teens, and they are feeling mischievous, be warned.
That evening before going out, grabbed a drink at the bar in the lobby. Drinks were surprisingly cheap (I'm going off Chicago prices) and strong and the bartender was nice.
Checkout the next day was seamless. Another HUGE plus for the Ameritania was that I paid for my room on a debit card and they didn't put a massive hold on my card like some hotels and I wasn't charged until I arrived at the hotel, no reservation fee ahead of time.
I stayed at Ameritania again in January after my great first experience. This time I arrived early again (10:30) and was told my room was ready right away, the desk staff thanked me for coming back to the hotel and upgraded me to a deluxe size room with a King bed. Again the construction across the street was loud during the day, but I was out and about so it wasn't a big deal to me and I sleep with ear plugs.
If the price remains low - I will continue to stay here.
