I had a good stay at the Manhattan, whose chief virtue is price relative to proximity to Times Square, Hell’s Kitchen, theaters, and midtown attractions. I paid just $147 a night for a room in January – prepaid, of course. That’s about half or less than other nearby hotels. Granted, the property is dated, and I don’t recommend walking on the carpet barefoot, a practice one should avoid as a rule. Further, I could not get the room to cool off, and I cannot sleep in the heat. No matter how many times I set the thermostat, it keep resetting to 72 degrees. I finally took the blamed thing off the wall and removed the batteries. That worked! They have free wireless in the lobby.
Also, the hotel has no bar and the restaurant is open only for breakfast. Apparently these amenities fell victim to the Great Recession. But, never fear! There is for sure no shortage of restaurants and watering holes in that part of Manhattan.
The walls are a bit thin. One night, I was entertained by some hearty-partying neighbors who clearly had had a great night on the town. They were not shouting, but were certainly speaking enthusiastically! A gentleman neighbor was prome to break into song at intervals. So I don’t know if they had come from a show or what. But there were having fun. I was going to go join them! They settled down by 11-ish. Point is, the walls are a long way from soundproofed.
All in all, a good place to stay in an expensive, happening area.
