Look, for this money on New Year's Eve a few blocks from Times Square, we felt this was fine. No, it's not a luxury residence, nor is it 'big on service'. It's functional and it's inexpensive, so for the purposes of acting as a 2-day base for shopping and dining out, it was absolutely ideal.
I booked on Hotwire (3* Times Square Area). The location & descriptions were typically slightly embellished, but genuinely I think it met, rather than exceeded or missed my expectations. Costs to me as follows, bearing in mind it was for 31st December and 01 January:
Rate per night: $234.00 / Nights: 2 / Rooms: 1 / Taxes: $45.96 / Occupancy tax: $32.44 / Fees: $15.88 / Subtotal: $562.27 / Trip total: $562.27
I haven't posted photos because the ones published are all pretty accurate and if you remove the emotional descriptions (both good and bad), then the images pretty much speak for themselves. We didn't have peeling paint around the room, nor did we feel it was unclean inside. It was just very basic and outdated. As I say, for our purposes, that really didn't matter. Had we planned on staying in NYC for longer than 2 days, or intended using the room as anything more than somewhere to store our belongings and to sleep, then probably we'd have picked something more than a 3* anyway. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to do so (and yes, we know we're fortunate in that regard), so to try to remain objective about Murray Hill East I'd say it was absolutely fine. Not great, not terrible - 'fit for purpose', if your purpose is in line with ours.
For reference, we were given a street-facing room. Not ideal on NYE, especially because the only way to reduce the temperature was to open the window, but compared to the Waldorf Astoria 10 days later (reviewed separately if you're interested in that one), it was not something which bothered us unduly.
For any date other than NYE and NYD, I would be miffed at paying these prices for this level of accommodation, but we know NYC hotels well enough and neither the Hilton, Hyatt, W nor Waldorf would have merited the >$450/night + taxes they were demanding (for our purposes on this occasion), at this time of the year.
Hope that helps?
