We arrived in New York following a three week break after seeing the beautiful colours of New England in the fall and the accommodation was something of a let down. Situated in a beautiful and peaceful street in the West Village area we thought our luck was in. We arrived later than anticipated due to our luggage somehow not being on the same flight as us from Boston (we were advised this happens all the time on Delta and not to worry). We informed the owner of our situation and she was horrified that it might encroach on her time - her response was "I don't like answering the phone and I have to go out"! We were shown to our suite at the top of the stairs. Luckily the room had a phone so we informed Delta to contact this number rather than the one listed for the house. We spent all day and the next morning waiting for our luggage (it finally arrived around 2.00 pm the following day).

The room was quaint but do not book this room if you are over 5 foot 6 as the ceiling is very low. I'm 6 foot 3 and my partner is 5 foot 11 so we had a little difficulty, either trying to negotiate the tight fit of the room (ensuite in here means a bathroom and toilet behind a small screen) or negotiating the slight stairwell (would love to see the fire inspection report on this - if indeed it exists)

During our stay Majorie's (the owner) disinterest was palpable. It is obvious that she is only letting out the rooms for the money and has no interest or time for her guests.

For the price I cannot recommend this place other than for the location. If you wish to stay in this area do you research and book elsewhere well in advance so you don't have to settle for Rooms to Let.

Beautiful spacious room with interesting books and artwork plus friendly cat! I found the place to be home-like and welcoming, and also very well located on a lovely quiet residential street. I'd definitely stay again.

Please do not stay at this b and b unless you like the following:

A host who appears to actively dislike her clients. I don't want to be friends with my host, just have normal politeness... not to be found here
A battery of arch/hectoring notices about what to do... most usually what not to do
Sharing a grubby bathroom full of the owners stuff
Sleeping in a room full of the owners family stuff
Being awoken at anytime after 5.30 by her cat or dog whining at the bedroom door... and no sense from the host that this is an untenable situation.

I can afford a hotel, just chose this as it's in a great location. However, that is not compensation enough for the atmosphere within... absolutely ghastly. And if the owner reads this I beg her first to stop doing this business. She clearly despises her clients. And second, get some therapy...

I lived in New York for two years and now visit the city at least 3-4 times a year. I have never had such a horrible experience. It started badly when I arrived and there was no one to greet me, even though I had previously informed the owner when I would be arriving. After several phone calls I was at last able to contact Marjorie, who was quite rude and unapologetic. Even though I had reserved the upstairs suite, I was instead given the downstairs room. I should have protested this more, but I was tired and just wanted to go to sleep. The room was fine, but certainly could do with a more thorough cleaning.

In retrospect, I should have made alternative arrangments the next morning, but I didn't want to take time away from my vacation to try to find another room somewhere. This was a huge mistake. I could deal with the rude owner and the dusty room, but on the third night I finally reached my breaking point. At about 1:00 in the morning, I woke to the sound of the door to my room closing. I turned on the lights and got out of bed to see that some items on the dresser had been moved and one of the drawers was open. Luckily nothing was missing, as I had anything of worth in a bag beside my bed. I immediately called Marjorie and told her I was leaving. I ended up checking into the Hilton at 3:00 in the morning. The extra money was certainly worth my safety.

Although we stayed here nearly two years ago, I am visiting New York again (this time staying with friends in Queens) and have been wistfully thinking about my stay in this quaint, gorgeous bed & breakfast in the wonderfully hip MeatPackingDistrict of Manhattan.

My husband and I love to hit the town from dawn til the wee hours of the morning when we were in the city, and this hotel's great neighborhood, convenience to subway stops, and wonderful staff made it easy.
The B&B has a gorgeous, rare find of a garden, several floors of old brownstone-charm decorated with paintings by its artistic owner. The clean, air-conditioned bedrooms look out on the quiet tree-lined street.
The neighborhood it is nestled in is a rich in history and is steeped in contradiction: fish canneries nestle up against boutiques of up & coming famous designers. What is by day a working class destination becomes a hot nightspot when the sun goes down.

One small drawback to this hotel (not uncommon with B&Bs) is that the rooms on the main floor (the two smaller, more affordable rooms) share a bathroom. This makes for a little less privacy and a little less convenience than I'm used to with other hotels.

But the money we spent on this was very similar to "Budget" hotels in New York, and we loved every minute! I highly recommend this as an alternative to a hotel.
