I suspect that most people stay at the 1871 house because they want something a bit different to the normal tourist trap; you certainly will get that.
The location is fantastic. You are close to Central Park, the subway and the vibrancy of 5th Avenue. The neighbourhood is remarkably quiet given the activity just a block and a half away. The area is well serviced by restaurants, cafes, and everything else that you could need.
Clearly the attraction of the 1871 house is its character. Furnished eclectically, the Madison Suite, is a two bedroom suite with the additional master bed in the lounge area. The usability of the room was diminished, however, by the enormous cupboard in the lounge. It housed the TV, but the TV could not be on without the unit's doors protruding into the loung area. Please replace the unit with something much smaller.
There were a couple of concerns that we had with our 7 night stay:
- the locks on the door were old and were really challenging to use. Indeed, we think that they posed a fire hazard because we would not have been able to use them in the event of a fire.
- we were woken on our first night by a mouse eating through a bread packet that we had on the counter in the kitchen. This made us paranoid about cleanliness and meant that we had to ensure that all food was stored in the fridge or the microwave to that the mice could not get at it.
- our rubbish was not taken out for three days. This would not have been a problem except the for mice!
Overall, greta location and undisputed charm, but a few issues that would make us think twice about going back.
