Stayed partly for business and partly pleasure. The standard, formerly the cooper sq hotel, is a glass n steel high rise in the otherwise flat and charming grungy neighbourhood of Bowery and the East village. It's a nicely designed place as you'd expect from the Standard group. Lovely lounges with a Danish feel, large library of books for sale with proceeds to charity, two bars and a restaurant - everything in muted colours and even more muted lighting. We had a nice time but spent v little of it in the hotel. The room was probably the main reason, as it was pretty small for the price and hard for two people to actually move around in. We switched from a queen sized bed room to a king sized thinking that it would be bigger, alas no, the bed was indeed huge but it just filled an otherwise unremarkable room on 6th floor with a terrible view of a brick wall. The heating/cooling is noisy but not awful and u can at least turn it off. Rooms on higher floors have better views so go for something above 8-9 if you can - it goes up to 20 or 21. The bathrooms were nice with good pressure, massage showers and lots of hot water. Lovely black hooded robes and nice bespoke toiletries. We did spend an afternoon in one of the lounges drinking tea then Ono cocktails which was all lovely. Service was keen and mostly v efficient, the housekeeping ladies turn up constantly unless u put the privacy sign on and our room was nicely turned out morning and evening. One time we returned to find the bed covers were soaking. Very odd, like they had been put on without being dried first. however a couple of minutes later someone arrived with apologies and fresh sheets. The staff are relaxed and pleasant but probably a bit too cool for me. The best thing is the location as that part of town is now packed with up and coming bars and restaurants plus you can walk to Chinatown, NOLITA and SOHO easily enough. there is a complementary entry to a nearby health club which has a pool and spa but we never had time. Wifi worked well but you do have to keep relogging in. I'd go again but don't feel too strongly about it. Certainly far from my worst NYC experience but no more than above average. It might be more of a destination in summer when there are two outdoor terraces to enjoy drinks on. Might had been different if we had a better room so make sure you get a decent view and space to swing your iPad
