“A room for the location, and nothing else.”

This hotel was billed as the hidden gem of the West Village on several websites and travel guides. I booked four nights in the winter and got one night free. The hotel--calling it such is a stretch-- is a tiny building among residential apartments on 11th Street. There is a small lobby, and not much else by way of amenities. I stayed in a closet of a room overlooking 11th Strret, for 3 nights, then was moved to a larger room that had no view whatsoever. The small room had a bed, a desk, and a closet. There is hardly room to walk. A sink is in the corner of the room. The cot is fairly uncomfortable, and the shared bathroom and shower are very small. Down the hall are full-time residents who sit with the door opened. One saw me and followed me down the hallway. It was odd. The larger room was similar in furniture, but the heat was unbearably warm, and the cot very uncomfortable and loud when you move. The doors are adjar so light seeps in from the brightly lit hallways. If you want to stay in the Village, and are on a tight budget, try the hotel Jane, further West, near the High Line. The Larchmont is nothing more than a run down building in a great tree-lined neighborhood.

“Disappointing stay-not a good value despite good location”

We have stayed here three times and the overall condition of the place seems to have deteriorated to the point where it does not offer the minimal conditions for a comfortable stay. We stayed there this last month during a frigid cold weekend, our small room was very cold since the heater sputtered hot water and rattled but did not work. The bed was supposed to be full size for two adults but the blankets were too small and did not fit the bed.
The toilet stopped working in the middle of the night and could not be fixed.
Additionally, the shared bathrooms lack a sink or any kind of hand washing facilities, which means everybody has to return to their rooms to wash up in the small sink inside the room: I would guess every door knob in this hotel should be disinfected several times a day, but it isn't...

“Dirty hot and smelly”

I stayed here just after Christmas (2011) and was quite disappointed. Shared bath I knew about; okay, the room doesn't cost much; i made concessions. Unfortunately the toilet stopped working in one of the 2 bathrooms and the staff, nice as they were, couldn't make it work reliably. When I used the other toilet it was so cramped I had to move my legs to the side to close the door.

In my room the window was small and so dirty I could barely see the courtyard below; the bare steam pipe that provide the heat couldn't be turned down so the room was about 85 degrees most of the time. The carpet was really gross.

“Good location”

5nights, small Double room about US$145 per night after all taxes. (Cheap especially since we were staying leading up to New Years Eve). Other accomodation was absorbently priced!)

Pros
- Small hotel in a quiet neighbourhood. Great location within 5-7mins of Metro lines and great value in New York City.
- Security very good - 3 Keys required to enter (front door, hallway, room key)
- Staff very helpful and friendly
- Complementary continental breakfast - small selection of tea, coffee, juice, pastries, toast and apples. Nothing special but sufficient.
-Shared bathroom/toilet - 2 in hallway always seemed to be available when required and clean.
-Complementary computer and printer in their reception area but wifi connection in our rooms was poor.

Cons
- Very small double room
- We were on 5th floor west next to the hallway door, so a little noisy at times.
-Building had 3 wifi connections but we could not get a good connection from any of them. The lobby had good connection if we went and sat on the 2nd floor steps.
-No tea/coffee facilities.

Overall great location and value in NYC. It tries to provide the extras such as wifi, breakfast, service which is a nice touch but could be better. Then again you dont really stay here for 5 star service. Does the job of a good night sleep and location.

“Excellent value for the location”

This is not a fancy establishment, or a place you'd want to come home to every night forever, but it can't be beaten for its Greenwich Village location. I did a lot of research into the best value for money in New York, since we're on a budget that doesn't go far in this town, and I think the Larchmont is a great compromise as somewhere comfortable, quiet and well-located while remaining a lot more affordable than somewhere with perhaps more up-to-date bedspreads.

Our room was undeniably a touch shabby and utilitarian, but sunny and clean and of a decent size - there was plenty of room to move around the bed even with our large cases open. There was a well-sized chest-of-drawers and wardrobe with robe and slippers. It was very quiet from both inside and out the hotel; there was some noise from the central-heating pipes that sounded weirdly like an animal whimpering at first, until I realised what it was - all part of the New York charm and novelty. I'd specifically asked for a quiet room in the booking submission, and was grateful we'd been granted one at the far end of a corridor on the third floor, with a kitchen no one ever used on our other side.

I'm never overly enthusiastic about the whole negotiating-of-shared-bathrooms thing, but this was offset by the convenient sink and mirror in the room, so traipsing up and down the hallway for every little handwashing or makeup-applying was minimised. In three days, I never once had to wait for the bathroom or toilet to be vacated, and they were kept spotlessly clean. They might have been old and utilitarian and covered in decades of reapplied cream paint, but they fulfilled their task.

There was a breakfast included in the room rate, which was served across a counter in a small room in the basement by a woman not to be messed with - it was like being at boarding school. The breakfast was pretty basic - pastries, packaged juice, apples - and we used it to take the edge off and then strolled over to Greenwich Avenue to Soy Cafe for real coffee most mornings. We only met the staff briefly, but they were all friendly and helpful, especially the man who helped us upstairs with our luggage and then greeted us whenever we came and went. The cleaning women were pleasant whenever we briefly encountered them.

Other reviews have complained about the smell in the stairwell, and I noticed that too, but couldn't really care about it - it's just a characterful old building with over a century's worth of accumulated boiled-cabbage cooking smells. Why are people so picky about unimportant details when they're paying $140 for a double room in Greenwich Village?
