“In the heart of the Village”

I had a great stay at the Abingdon. You cannot beat the location in the heart of the village. Walked to the Village Vanguard one night. Walked to coffee shops and great restaurants. Window shopping, too. Also, it's a couple of blocks from a YMCA which had an online offer of a free one day pass, too.
I hadn't ever heard of a guest house before. Basically, it's a B&B with just one "B." So, very quaint. Each room unique with antiques and artwork. A friend stayed in a room in the back which was really quiet so I was concerned that my room was right on 8th Avenue, but I slept very well both nights. Robert was very accommodating, meeting me to give me the keys. The place is a bit run down, but hey, it's the Village. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

“Quaint, clean, perfect location”

Contrary to the negative reviews you might see below, this lodging turned out to be ideal for the budget-minded, independent travellers that we are. My daughter and I stayed in the Perrin Room. It had two twin-size beds and the decor reminded me of the homey cottages of Cape Cod. The room and the separate, but private bath, were well-stocked and cleaned each day. Robert answered the phone each time I called and was very prompt in meeting us at the Inn. Junior does a great job with the cleaning and is very hospitable. If I owned the two buildings that make up this Inn, I would find some of the beautiful, sold-wood doors and replace the cheap front doors currently installed and make the entry halls and stairwells more inviting - not because it is a must, but because it would give a much more positive first impression. We had a great time in NYC and will definitely come back to the Abingdon Guest House. As an aside, we viewed the room next to the Perrin after the guests there had left and it is very nice, with a large bed, new windows and private bath. I believe that one was $219 per night as opposed to $169 per night for the Perrin.

Room Tip: The Perrin Room is fairly quiet but has no view. The room next to it has street views, new, sound-p...

“Condition like group house you shared in college”

We loved the West Village location, and the notion of an inn rather than an anonymous hotel. The place was clean, but very battered. The manager told us that the owner died earlier this year, and the estate/property is in probate. That may explain some, though not all, of the deteriorated condition. There is also considerable street noise, but, hey, it's the village. Not a deal killer in our view. We were tempted to give this a poor rating because, as others have noted, the photos on the inn's website do not reflect its group-house condition. But the location was great, our bed comfortable, and we weren't there much. So an "average" rating it is, though it won't be the go-to NYC inn/hotel we'd hoped for. (Could be very cool place if renovated...for now, however, they should lower their rates.)

“Great location, fine for the price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2011

Just spent 4 nights at the Abingdon House with my husband and inlaws, and we would definitely go back again. We had the Roxbury and Windsor Rooms at the 21 8th Avenue address (there is another building at 13 8th Ave). After reading some of the recent reviews I was feeling apprehensive about our visit - but there was no need. No, it's not the Four Seasons, nor is it a vanilla identikit hotel with pastel walls and guaranteed fluffy bath-towels - but it's not $500 a night! If fluffy bath towels is what you're all about, then you might be disappointed. But if you're looking for a reasonably priced guest house, with loads of character, in a great location then this is a good place to lay your head at night. Yes, it has maybe seen better days, but it's a listed building from the mid-1800's with character to prove it, and, let's face it, we were only sleeping there. The rooms have lots of character, the heating worked fine, we were amazed at how little sound we heard from 8th Avenue so good sound proofing, our room was cleaned every day, the bathrooms were clean, Robert met us on schedule, and we thought the place was charming. There are tons of great cafes near by, it's only a 1 minute walk to Bleeker Street and 5 minutes walk from the subway. Be sure to stop in to the Chocolate Bar below for a great hot chocolate. Do let Robert know what time you'll be arriving so he can be there to meet you. We rang him from the airport as we were getting on the train and it all went like clockwork. If you like quirky charm and set your expectations right, then you'll have a fine time at the Abingdon House. We did, and we'd definitely go back.

“A dump in need of vast renovation”

The website no longer represents the actual appearance ....Look elsewhere. Our third stay in the Ambassador room was a terrible mistake...Noise from the office, upstairs room and the hallway were excessive...my recommendation to the new owner-the old one died this year, is to close down and gut the place! Felt gouged!

Room Tip: Look elsewhere...
