Just spent 4 nights at the Abingdon House with my husband and inlaws, and we would definitely go back again. We had the Roxbury and Windsor Rooms at the 21 8th Avenue address (there is another building at 13 8th Ave). After reading some of the recent reviews I was feeling apprehensive about our visit - but there was no need. No, it's not the Four Seasons, nor is it a vanilla identikit hotel with pastel walls and guaranteed fluffy bath-towels - but it's not $500 a night! If fluffy bath towels is what you're all about, then you might be disappointed. But if you're looking for a reasonably priced guest house, with loads of character, in a great location then this is a good place to lay your head at night. Yes, it has maybe seen better days, but it's a listed building from the mid-1800's with character to prove it, and, let's face it, we were only sleeping there. The rooms have lots of character, the heating worked fine, we were amazed at how little sound we heard from 8th Avenue so good sound proofing, our room was cleaned every day, the bathrooms were clean, Robert met us on schedule, and we thought the place was charming. There are tons of great cafes near by, it's only a 1 minute walk to Bleeker Street and 5 minutes walk from the subway. Be sure to stop in to the Chocolate Bar below for a great hot chocolate. Do let Robert know what time you'll be arriving so he can be there to meet you. We rang him from the airport as we were getting on the train and it all went like clockwork. If you like quirky charm and set your expectations right, then you'll have a fine time at the Abingdon House. We did, and we'd definitely go back.
