“Left after seeing room”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

We decided to find another hotel after seeing room. The floor was dusty and dirty. It was a non-smoking room, but there were large burn holes in the bedding. Also there were hairs of previous guests on the sheets. The microwave was an interesting archeological find, must be one of the first ever made. The manager (owner) was cooperative when I told him I wouldn't be staying

“CHEAP,... in everything! Extreme ratio/choice”

The hotel is enough clean, but "cheap". The breakfast is included, but it's really poor. I dind't try the Pool. The Air conditiong it's awful:noisy all the night. The value for money is avarage, but probably it's the cheapest choice at Carlsbad. Good for budget-saving people

“The Singular Worst Hotel I Have Ever Stayed At”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2011

Booked two rooms at the Great Western for a week as we were doing work at Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The room that I was given was not suitable for anyone not drunk or blind...the fixtures dated to approximately 1975 from doorknob to shower curtain ring. The room was a smoking room, which I had not requested.

I spoke with the owner to see if I could be transferred to another room and my request was granted - though no discount was offered even though I was switching from a "suite" to a single room. The single room was better in that it did not have an oven that was 40 years old and did not smell as though a carton of Marlboroughs had been lit and left to fester and mold under the beds.

Amenities were few and consisted of clean (bleached) towels and a 1.5" x 3" pouch of conditioning shampoo. The one plus that the hotel had in its pocket was that Internet access was extremely fast, at least until the last two nights in which connection has been spotty at best and transfer speeds max out at 5.0 Mbps.

The proprietors are nice enough, but the hotel is incredibly dilapidated and in need of serious repairs in every room. These people have had the chance to fix the property and have chosen not to. Do NOT GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY AND DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL. Absolutely awful.

“It was OK for one night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2011

When we walked in the place looked like it came straight from a 70s sitcom. Lots of paneling everywhere with decent furniture and dark wood cabinets. The queen beds were very comfortable however, no fitted sheet so the tossing and turning at night brought the bottom sheet off the bed. There was no coffee pot nor hair dryer in the room and the shower was a bit cramped but otherwise ok. We traveled with a roll of duct tape just in case the doors do not close properly--glad we did because on the evening we were there, the wind blew at over 50 mph with heavy gusts. Had we not sealed the back door, frame around the ac/heating unit and window, we would have certainly felt the drafts. There is not much grass available for walking the dogs and it seems people who have stayed there before, did not pick up after their dogs and neither did maintenance. My partner's pillow cases were smeared with what looked like oil so he went and exchanged for clean ones. Other than the above, we had a good night's sleep.

“No Coffee Pot”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2010

The room was clean, warm, and quiet. The bed was confortable. The breakfast of cereal and muffins was ok. The high speed internet was fine and didn't require a password.

The web page stated that they provided in-room coffee and hair dryers. It had neither. When I asked the clerk (manager?) about it the next morning he said "not in the room" and didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I told him that the web page said they were provided. Other than walking across the parking lot to get coffee (same as Motel 6) I think I got what I paid for.
