My partner and I visited Canyon De Chelly as a side attraction, in a very intense trip which took us to Hoover Damm, Great Canyon, Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley before getting into Canyon the Chelly. Afterwards, we visited the Bryce Canyon before returning to Las Vegas.
We came from Monument Vally into Chinle, spent a night at the Holiday Inn, and visited Canyon De Chelly the next day, and departed to Bryce.
Holiday Inn is one of the 2 hotels in Chinle. The other one is near the road. As pointed out by many reviewers, the Holiday Inn is better located, near the entrance to the Canyon and the visitor Center. I do not believe there is anything else that can make you come to Chinle, so being close to its sole attraction is a plus.
The Hotel has a pool, which we did not use since we were not here to relax, but to make the best use of our time to explore the Canyon. However, it was nice to take a dive into the pool, considering we travelled in early September and it was really hot.
The hotel has a gift shop and a restaurant (indipendently owned and operated). Breakfast is not included on the rate, so you can either pay for your breakfast at the restaurant, or go out and get your morning coffee somewhere else. There is only 1 other restaurant in Chinle and it is located in the other hotel. Or you can go (as we did) to the Burguer King which is in the road, near the entrance of town. Or to the convenient store at the the Shell gas station. These are your options.
The room was confortable, with good size. The air conditioner worked perfectly and the bed was confortable. We had a great sleep, but we noticed the sound of the laundry room when we went in and out of the room. So I take other reviewers advise and recomment not to stay in any room near the laundry room.
The staff is not warm neither very smily. Actually, they were rude and unfriendly regarding a problem I had. I received a message on my Ipod from my bank, requesting me to check an Excel file with some debits they were planning to make on my account. I did not have Excel on the Ipod. I checked and found no Internet cafe in Chinle I could use. So I turned to the front desk agent, explained my situation, and asked her I I could use her computer for 2 minutes, just to check the file with the debits. She refused and suggested me to go to the local bank or the post office, both located on the other side of town. I knew it was worthless, but checked both spots and found out I could not use computers there. I returned to the hotel and asked again. I was refused to use the computer again. I asked if I could ask the manager. The agent made me wait for about 30 minutes, and then the manager told me that he was sorry, but his computer was not available for me either. Thanks God the restaurant manager had overheard my suplications, and she allowed me to use her computer. I checked what I needed to check in less than a minute.
All in all, we only stayed in the hotel to sleep. It is overpriced and after leaving Chinle we agreed that we could have stayed in Kayenta for less money, and drive to Chenli to see the Canyon.
