We just returned from San Diego after staying for 4 days at the Inn at the Park (formerly Park Avenue Suites). I was hesitant because of the mixed reviews, but after stepping through the door of our King Bed Suite, Room 608, I was entranced. The room had not been remodeled yet, and I was so very glad to stay before the historical aspects are forever removed. I LOVED all the 80+ year old built-in shelving in the dressing room, and the kitchen is a history buff's dream: etched glass cupboard doors, a built-in "pantry" cupboard with grates for air flow, and, my favorite--an antique built-in Kelvinator mini-fridge (non-working). See my posted picture. The bathtub was huge and deep with a rainfall showerhead; the bed was comfortable (small square pillows were not).
Our room was right off the elevator and across from the bottom of the (steep) stairs to the morning continental breakfast on the 7th floor, and although there was a party upstairs on the 1st night of our stay, the only time we could hear anything was when the people were leaving down the stairs.
If you are a ghost hunter (this place appears to ooze with spirits), do not mind that the lack of air conditioning (we found it non-necessary surprisingly), like a 1930-40's atmosphere, and want to be within walking distance of Balboa Park and Hillcrest (a tad further but walkable), then Inn at the Park is for you.
