I recently stayed at this hotel for one night on business. It was the worst experiences I have had at a hotel at any price level. I travel frequently all over the world for business. This time I was hosting a guest from out of the country and we chose to stay downtown San Diego for the experience for him, but I was very embarrassed by this hotel. This hotel is charging a premium rate and trying to put a premium window dressing on the experience but is completely incapable of executing the fundamentals.
Here are the specifics:
-- Valet parking is the only option for parking and it is $30. Everything in this area of town is expensive, but still for $30 you would expect good service. It is horrible. It took over 15 minutes to get the car. Furthermore all the cars arriving were stacked up and no one could get in because they were so slow to park them.
-- Front desk staff is very rude and slow. We inquired about early check-in and without even checking the reception staff just said nothing was available. Ok fine, but this also meant we could not utilize the business center because although it is next to the front desk it requires a key to enter and we were not allowed to use it until we could be assigned a room.
-- WiFi fee is $13/day and there is no free option in the lobby.
-- The elevators are slow and it is a long wait for this busy hotel. I finally was checked in and I went to my room on 9th floor only to find my keys would not work. I made my way back to the lobby, waited in line again, they re-scanned my keys with NO apology, I went back up to my room, again the keys did not work. I went back down waited in line again -- 40 minutes wasted. This time they discover OOPS! they had given me the wrong room. They get this straightened out, hand me a key and I head to my room. NO apology.
-- The room was clean. However, they are changing from old tube tvs to flat screens and the armoire in my room was half dismantled with video game controllers hanging out like a college dorm.
-- Breakfast. Somehow they managed to burn our custom cooked omelettes. The food at the buffet was terrible...soggy potatoes, rubbery French toast and the toaster barely worked.
-- While we were eating breakfast a maintenance worker rolled a cart through the middle of where everyone was eating. On top of the cart was a kitchen floormat. We saw him go through the kitchen and came right back with what appeared to be the same cart now with clean dishes were the mat was and go put them out at the buffet.
-- The hotel was very busy and I saw a lot of employees standing around doing a whole lot of nothing while guests were waiting for help.
I will spend my money elsewhere the next time I visit San Diego.
