“Good value for the money”

When my small band of value-minded travelers go to conventions I'm put in charge of finding the hotel. While I'm usually wary of non-branded hotels I took a chance on the Pacific Inn. In general, we were pleased with the value for our money.

Check in was quick and painless and I was able to get my room even though I was there 30 minutes before check in time. My key didn't work but I went back to the front desk and got a new one. No great inconvenience there. The room was functional, though it's missing some of the amenities in just about every other place I've stayed: no hair dryer, no iron/ironing board, and no coffee maker. Apparently some rooms have fridges and microwaves, but not mine. They are updating some rooms though, based on the comments here, this seems to be a continuous work in progress.

As for the noise, I wasn't really affected by it. Yes, there are railroad tracks right behind the hotel and the airport is close by and you will hear the noise but they didn't bother me.

The continental breakfast consisted of individually wrapped bagels and danishes, fruit, coffee, and cereal. If that isn't enough for you there's a Jack in the Box next door and a Denny's up the street.

The convention center is about 1.5 miles away. If you don't want to walk you can take the trolley though you will need to change trains. Or you can just drive since convention center parking is $10. I would definitely consider staying here again if I'm going to the convention center.

Room Tip: The further back you are the more train noise you'll get.

I was very pleased to hear you and your convention group enjoyed your stay with us. We do offer hairdryers irons, boards and coffee makers inside the room in our beautiful suites. We do also have those items at our front desk irons, boards, and hairdryers. For our coffee drinking guests we have fresh coffee that we leave out in our front lobby also. Rooms with fridges and microwaves are available upon request although not all rooms have them we will gladly get you in a room with a fridge or microwave if we have it available. We truly hope to see you and your group next time in sunny San Diego.

“GREAT Deal for the Money!”

I am usually on the go when I vacation. So I was just looking for a decent, affordable place to crash in a good location. This place surpassed the expectations I had based on reviews I read before booking. John was working the desk for most of my stay, and was extremely friendly and helpful. There is some noise from trains, but it never kept me awake or woke me up. The hotel is just a couple blocks away from Little Italy, a charming neighborhood. It is also in close proximity to trolley lines, bus to the airport, and the ferry to Coronado. The rooms were clean and well-kept. I couldn't have been more happy with my experience. If I make it back to San Diego, I will be staying here.

“Good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

We only stayed for one night, preparing for the blues cruise on Sunday, but our impression is very positive for this small hotel/inn. The location is superb, within walking distance to the port and seaside, and John at the front desk was very helpful in advicing us for a meal in Little Italy as well as where to find some groceries on a Saturday evening. Quite simple breakfast, but you can get everything you need nearby for a small amount, so that´s no problem.

This property is an excellent location for any San Diego based activities. It is one block from the San Diego Bay and one block to get onto Hwy 5- we had to be in San Diego for oncology appointments at Balboa Naval Hospital and found this location and price to be very convenient and affordable. The property is well maintained, carpeting all looked very new and very clean. the staff, especially the front desk, Shari and John are knowledgeable about the area and very helpful. We will book there again whether attending doctor appointments or picking up friends flying into San Diego. The airport is less than a mile, BUT we never heard the planes. They offer a continental breakfast and there are so many nearby restaurant that you can walk to in Little Italy or the waterfront.

“Worked for us, and I'm picky.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

This is not the kind of hotel I would normally consider, but there was a convention in town in December and we needed a hotel close to the cruise port. However, this place worked FINE for us. Yes, there was some noise from the trains going by, but I just closed the window, turned on the air conditioner, and didn't have any problem at all. And the trains had stopped running by the time we went to bed.

This is a small, 60's style hotel with a very small front office and rooms accessed from the outside. The only thing I didn't like was having to lug my very heavy suitcase (for a two week cruise to Hawaii) up the outside stairs.

Our room was very tastefully decorated. It had been recently renovated. The bathroom was small but had decorator tile and a granite countertop. The king sized bed was quite comfortable. The room also had comfortable furniture and decorator colored walls, and nice bedspreads and bedding.

The front desk lady when we checked in was fantastic and so helpful. She called a taxi to take us to the cruise port the next morning. It arrived in less than 5 minutes. The hotel even had maps on the counter showing all the eating establishments in the area. (However, the guy behind the front desk the next morning seem disinterested and not particularly friendly.)

The continental breakfast consisted of your typical bagels, pastries, fruits, cereals, etc. as well as coffee and juices. The only place to sit was at several tables on the covered front porch, but we just brought our food up to our room and ate at the nice table in there which was just fine.

It may not have been the fanciest hotel in the area, but it was close (walking distance) to everything, and the room itself was not that much different than at the nicer hotels I usually stay at. If you are looking for a place near the Gas Lamp area and cruise port, this will work fine for you.

Room Tip: If you don't want to lug a heavy suitcase upstairs, request a ground floor room.
